1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Danish mathematician Hieronymus George Zeuthen. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.

This volume brings together recent, original research and survey articles by leading experts in several fields that include singularity theory, algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. The motivation for this collection comes from the wide-ranging research of the distinguished mathematician, Antonio Campillo, in these and related fields. Besides his influence in the mathematical community stemming from his research, Campillo has also endeavored to promote mathematics and mathematicians' networking everywhere, especially in Spain, Latin America and Europe. Because of his impressive achievements throughout his career, we dedicate this book to Campillo in honor of his 65th birthday. Researchers and students from the world-wide, and in particular Latin American and European, communities in singularities, algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, coding theory, and other fields covered in the volume, will have interest in this book.

This volume arises from the contributions presented at the MEGA 94 Con­ ference (Metodos Efectivos en Geomctria Algebraica = Effective Methods in Algebraic Geometry), held at the University of Cantabria (Santander, Spain) April 59, 1994. Previous sessions of this biannual conference had taken place in Castiglioncello (Livorno, Italy, 1990) and in Nice (France, 1992) and the cor­ responding proceedings have been published in the Birkhauser series Progress in Mathematics. volumes no. 94 and 109, respectively. The present collection consists of twenty articles involvillg miscellaneous topics concerning algorithms in algebra, algebraic geometry and related appli­ cations. Fourteen of these papers correspond to the contents of the Conference's regular scientific program and have been selected, by the MEGA Committee, from the submitted contributions after a very rigorous refereeing procedure entailing an average of three independent reports per paper and two Program Committee panel discussions before and after the Conference. The remaining six papers (by S. Beck & M. Kreuzer, M. Bronstein, E. V. Flvnn. 1. Itenberg, J.-P. Merlet and 1\1. Seppala) correspond to invited talks and have also been subject to a post-conference refereeing procedure.

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference Local and Global Methods in Algebraic Geometry, held from May 12–15, 2016, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in honor of Lawrence Ein's 60th birthday. The articles cover a broad range of topics in algebraic geometry and related fields, including birational geometry and moduli theory, analytic and positive characteristic methods, geometry of surfaces, singularity theory, hyper-Kähler geometry, rational points, and rational curves.

The articles in this volume are the outcome of the Impanga Conference on Algebraic Geometry in 2010 at the Banach Center in Bedlewo. The following spectrum of topics is covered: K3 surfaces and Enriques surfaces Prym varieties and their moduli invariants of singularities in birational geometry differential forms on singular spaces Minimal Model Program linear systems toric varieties Seshadri and packing constants equivariant cohomology Thom polynomials arithmetic questions The main purpose of the volume is to give comprehensive introductions to the above topics, starting from an elementary level and ending with a discussion of current research. The first four topics are represented by the notes from the mini courses held during the conference. In the articles, the reader will find classical results and methods, as well as modern ones. This book is addressed to researchers and graduate students in algebraic geometry, singularity theory, and algebraic topology. Most of the material in this volume has not yet appeared in book form.
