This book is an outcome of the Second International Conference on Mathematical Population Dynamics. It is intended for mathematicians, statisticians, biologists, and medical researchers who are interested in recent advances in analyzing changes in populations of genes, cells, and tumors.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Conference in Population Biology held at The University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada from June 22 to June 30, 1982. The Conference was sponsored by The University of Alberta and The Canadian Applied Mathematics Society, and overlapped with the summer meeting of CAMS. The main objectives of this Conference were: to bring mathematicians and biologists together so that they may interact for their mutual benefit; to bring those researchers interested in modelling in ecology and those interested in modelling in genetics together; to bring in keynote speakers in the delineated areas; to have sessions of contributed papers; and to present the opportunity for researchers to conduct workshops. With the exception of the last one, the objec tives were carried out. In order to lend some focus to the Conference, the following themes were adopted: models of species growth, predator-prey, competition, mutualism, food webs, dispersion, age structure, stability, evolution of ecological parameters, evolution of behaviour, life history strategies, group and social selection, and evolution of genetic systems. There were speakers (invited and/or contributed papers) in each of these areas. Talks were given on Tuesday, June 22 to Friday, June 25 and on Monday, June 28 to Wednesday, June 30. On each day there were several talks by the principal speakers as well as contributed sessions. Altogether, there were ninety one papers given, of which twelve were by the principal speakers. There were one hundred and twenty-three registered participants from twelve different countries.

Population biology has had a long history of mathematical modeling. The 1920s and 1930s saw major strides with the work of Lotka and Volterra in ecology and Fisher, Haldane, and Wright in genetics. In recent years, much more sophisticated mathematical techniques have been brought to bear on questions in population biology. Simultaneously, advances in experimental and field work have produced a wealth of new data. While this growth has tended to fragment the field, one unifying theme is that similar mathematical questions arise in a range of biological contexts. This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium on Some Mathematical Questions in Biology, held in Chicago in 1987. The papers all deal with different aspects of population biology, but there are overlaps in the mathematical techniques used; for example, dynamics of nonlinear differential and difference equations form a common theme. The topics covered are cultural evolution, multilocus population genetics, spatially structured population genetics, chaos and the dynamics of epidemics, and the dynamics of ecological communities.

This is a collection of refereed papers presented at the 4th International Conference on Mathematical Population Dynamics. The selection of papers and their organization were made by the following persons: O Arino, D Axelrod, V Capasso, W Fitzgibbon, P Jagers, M Kimmel, D Kirschner, C Mode, B Novak, R Sachs, W Stephan, A Swierniak and H Thieme.It features some of the new trends in cell and human population dynamics. The main link between the two traits is that human populations of concern here are essentially those subject to cell diseases, either the processes of anarchic proliferation or those by which some cell lines are killed by an infectious agent.The volume is divided into 3 main parts. Each part is subdivided into chapters, each chapter concentrating on a specific aspect. Each aspect is illustrated by one or several examples, developed in sections contributed by several authors. A detailed introduction for each part will enable the reader to refer to chapters of interest. An index and a bibliography for each part is also included for easy reference.This book will be useful for those interested in the subject matter.
