On 8 February 2018, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, hosted a conference on challenges in the area of children, youth and adult education. This international scientific event was organized by the Institute of Educational Sciences of Pedagogical University of Cracow and the Faculty of Pedagogy of Charles University. The conference titled „New trends and research challenges in pedagogy and andragogy” met with great interest of researchers from Czech, Slovakia, Poland and Macedonia. During the seminar, 50 presentations were delivered by representatives from over a dozen of research centres, among them: Banska Bystrica, Bitoli, Cracow, Łodź, Poznań, Prague, Warsaw and Wrocław. It was one of many joint events organised through cooperation of universities from the Visegrad Group and partner Balkan scientific centres. The conference became a platform for exchanging methodological, didactic and organisational experiences. As a result, we present twenty papers which received positive evaluation by reviewers from: Czech, Finland, Spain, Macedonia, Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine. Thorough reviews enabled exchange of methodological comments, improving the final version of the publication.

This book explores the perceptions of academic staff and representatives of institutional leadership about the changes in academic careers and academic work experienced in recent years. It emphasizes standardisation and differentiation of academic career paths, impacts of new forms of quality management on academic work, changes in recruitment, employment and working conditions, and academics’ perceptions of their professional contexts. The book demonstrates a growing diversity within the academic profession and new professional roles inhabiting a space which is neither located in the core business of teaching and research nor at the top level management and leadership. The new higher education professionals tend to be important change agents within the higher education institutions not only fulfilling service and bridging functions but also streamlining academic work to make a contribution to the reputation and competitiveness of the institution as a whole. Based on interviews with academic staff, this book explores the situation in eight European countries: Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Romania, and Switzerland.

Why does a large proportion of the population engage in some form of gambling, although they know they are most likely to lose, and that the gambling industry makes huge profits? Do gamblers simply accept their losses as fate, or do they believe that they will be able to overcome the negative odds in some miraculous way? The paradox is complicated by the fact that those habitual gamblers who are most aware that systematic losses cannot be avoided, are the least likely to stop gambling. Detailed analyses of actual gambling behaviour have shown gamblers to be victims of a variety of cognitive illusions, which lead them to believe that the general statistical rules of determining the probability of loss do not apply to them as individuals. The designers of gambling games cleverly exploit these illusions in order to promote a false perception of the situation. Much of the earlier interest in gambling behaviour has been centred on the traditional theories of human decision-making, where decisions are portrayed as choices among bets. This led to a tradition of studying decision-making in experiments on betting. In this title, originally published in 1988, the author argues that betting behaviour should not be used as a typical example of human decision-making upon which a general psychological theory could be founded, and that these traditional views can in no way account for the gambling behaviour reported in this book.

The economic analysis of the digital economy has been a rapidly developing research area for more than a decade. Through authoritative examination by leading scholars, this Handbook takes a closer look at particular industries, business practices, and policy issues associated with the digital industry. The volume offers an up-to-date account of key topics, discusses open questions, and provides guidance for future research. It offers a blend of theoretical and empirical works that are central to understanding the digital economy.
