A modified and enlarged version of the project report "English in India: Sociolinguistic and Social Psychological Perspectives (A Pilot Study)" submitted to the British Council, New Delhi in March 1995. A random sample of 1,128 informants from different capital cities and age groups, as well as in-depth interviews with 73 professionals, educators, and politicians were used to determine the status, role and function of English from the time it was introduced in India; to present a profile of the needs, attitudes, and motivation of its users; and to examine how young people visualize the space of English in tomorrow's India. This book presents empirical studies on the various factors that influence English language learning and teaching in India. In particular, the author examines whether and to what extent the variables which have been shown to influence second language learning in monolingual countries also apply to the Indian situation which is characterized by multilingualism and multiculturalism.
