In the early days of the United States, maritime history played a pivotal role in the country's development, and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America recognized this importance by releasing a volume of documents highlighting privateering and piracy. While it might seem odd to pair these two subjects together, privateers often found themselves crossing into piracy due to the difficulty of remaining legal while operating on the high seas.
