Principles of Polarography is a revised and extended version of an original Czech edition that appeared in 1962 at the Publishing House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague. Based on a one-term course of lectures for third-year students of chemistry at the Charles University it brings the fundamental results of more than forty years' research in the field of polarography. The book contains 22 chapters and opens with a discussion of the principles of polarography. This is followed by separate chapters on polarizable electrodes used in polarography; charging current; influence of the resistance of the electrolyte on polarographic curves; migration and diffusion-controlled currents; and equation of a reversible polarographic wave. Subsequent chapters deal with reversible processes controlled by diffusion of complex ions; reversible reduction of organic substances; deposition of mercury ions; irreversible electrode processes; applications of limiting currents; polarographic curves for the formation of semiquinones and dimers; and catalytic hydrogen currents.

Contains the development and basic principles of polarography, a powerful tool of analytic chemistry. The theoretical background is presented simply, without the use of a detailed mathematical treatment. Laboratory experiments are described as well as newer developments with their applications in trace determinations. Includes references to polarographic literature and a tabulation of useful constants regarding inorganic and organic compounds.

Organic Polarographic Analysis deals with the applications of polarography in the analysis of organic compounds. The principles, techniques, and apparatus of organic polarography are discussed, and some selected examples of the applications of organic polarography in various fields of applied chemistry are presented. The direct methods in which the sample is simply dissolved in a suitable supporting electrolyte are also considered. This book consists of 11 chapters and opens with an overview of the basic principles of the polarographic method of analysis, as well as the different types of polarographic limiting currents and of electrode processes. The reader is then introduced to the instruments used in polarography, including the polarograph, dropping and reference electrodes, and electrolysis vessels. Experimental techniques in organic polarography are also described, along with some of its practical applications in fields such as pharmacy, medicine, and biochemistry. Subsequent chapters explore polarographic methods used in the analysis of organic substances, including direct and indirect methods of analysis; separation techniques; and the use of polarography in organic synthesis and isolation of natural products. This monograph is written primarily for organic and analytical chemists.

Analytical Chemistry Has Made Significant Progress In The Last Two Decades. Several Methods Have Come To The Forefront While Some Classical Methods Have Been Relegated. An Attempt Has Been Made In This Edition To Strike A Balance Between These Two Extremes, By Retaining Most Significant Methods And Incorporating Some Novel Techniques. Thus An Endeavour Has Been Made To Make This Book Up To Date With Recent Methods. The First Part Of This Book Covers The Classical Volumetric As Well As Gravimetric Methods Of Analysis. The Separation Methods Are Prerequisite For Dependable Quantitative Methods Of Analysis. Therefore Not Only Solvent Extraction Separations But Also Chromatographic Methods Such As Adsorption, Partition, Ion- Exchange, Exclusion Andelectro Chromatography Have Been Included. To Keep Pace With Modern Developments The Newly Discovered Techniques Such As Ion Chromatography, Super-Critical Fluid Chromatography And Capillary Electrophoresis Have Been Included. The Next Part Of The Book Encompases The Well Known Spectroscopic Methods Such As Uv, Visible, Ir, Nmr, And Esr Techniques And Also Atomic Absorption And Plasma Spectroscopy And Molecular Luminescences Methods. Novel Analytical Techniques Such As Auger, Esca And Photo Accoustic Spectroscopy Of Surfaces Are Also Included. The Final Part Of This Book Covers Thermal And Radioanalytical Methods Of Analysis. The Concluding Chapters On Electroanalytical Techniques Include Potientometry, Conductometry. Coulometry And Voltametry Inclusive Of All Kinds Of A Polarography. The Theme Of On Line Analysis Is Covered In Automated Methods Of Analysis. To Sustain The Interest Of The Reader Each Chapter Is Provided With Latest References To The Monographs In The Field. Further, To Test The Comprehension Of The Subject Each Chapter Is Provided With Large Number Of Solved And Unsolved Problems. This Book Should Be Useful To Those Reads Who Have Requisite Knowledge In Chemistry And Are Majoring In Analytical Chemistry. It Is Also Useful To Practising Chemists Whose Sole Aim Is To Keep Abreast With Modern Developments In The Field.
