The 57th Nestlé Pediatric Nutrition Workshop assembled a panel of leading international scientists in order to assess and extend the current state of knowledge on the long-term effects of early nutrition. Prevention of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer and the metabolic syndrome, by early nutrition intervention is the declared goal of this kind of research. Single papers deal with dietary effects on mental and motor impairment, the epidemical aspects of obesity, the complexity of the relationship between birth weight and adult BMI, the importance for primary prevention in childhood diabetes, the potential of nutritional prevention of osteoporosis, the nutritional key influences on cancer, and the surprising link between cancer and obesity, and many more. Complex, multifaceted and contradictory health outcomes of early nutrition elements clearly show that genetic or environmental interactions have to be taken into account, and compromises have to be found to establish a good balance of risks and benefits for the wide range of different health issues which depend on nutrition and early nutrition in particular.

The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

This book reviews the scientific basis for nutrition risk criteria used to establish eligibility for participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The volume also examines the specific segments of the WIC population at risk for each criterion, identifies gaps in the scientific knowledge base, formulates recommendations regarding appropriate criteria, and where applicable, recommends values for determining who is at risk for each criterion. Recommendations for program action and research are made to strengthen the validity of nutrition risk criteria used in the WIC program.

This volume presents criteria for evaluating treatment programs for obesity and explores what these criteria mean--to health care providers, program designers, researchers, and even overweight people seeking help. Discusses information necessary to make wise program choices and evaluations; examines how client demographics and characteristics--including health status, knowledge of weight-loss issues, and attitude toward weight and body image--affect these programs.

Designed for nurses and student nurses who work with this group, this book covers interventions for infants and children as clients, as well as the family as a client. Each chapter examines the theoretical and research literature support for the invention and links to appropriate nursing diagnoses and outcomes. A case study is presented to illustrate how each intervention is used in nursing practice. Implications for further research are presented with the goal of advancing nursing science by stimulating further study of nursing interventions.

Among the many troubling aspects of the rising prevalence of obesity in the United States and elsewhere in recent years, the growth of early childhood overweight and obesity stands out. To explore what is known about effective and innovative interventions to counter obesity in young children, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on Obesity Solutions held a workshop in October 2015. The workshop brought together many of the leading researchers on obesity in young children to describe the state of the science and potential solutions based on that research. Participants explored sustainable collaborations and new insights into the implementation of interventions and policies, particularly those related to nutrition and physical activity, for the treatment and prevention of obesity in young children. Obesity in the Early Childhood Years summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
