Re-Reading Zola and Worldwide Naturalism continues the discussion of Émile Zola and French naturalism with examinations of unexplored areas of the founding father’s project and legacy. In addition to offering essays on Zola’s lesser known naturalist contemporaries, the volume extends the investigation of the naturalist literary current to include areas of Europe outside France, as well as the Americas and Asia, tracking its persistence in various forms through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. The authors pay particular attention to the ways naturalism was conceived and then received, including in other channels, undergoing transformations in new social conditions and creating other versions of the basic precepts. This work features multidisciplinary and comparative approaches to the study of naturalism, paying tribute to Anna Gural-Migdal—a Professor of French Literature and Film Studies at the University of Alberta, in Canada, who specializes in the visual aspect of Zola’s Rougon Macquart novels and the transfer of these strategies to naturalist film. She has been a leader in the field of Zola and naturalism in her role as president of the AIZEN for almost fifteen of its twenty years of existence.

Hitherto undiscovered yet fundamental historical and literary texts from the Pacific provide the subject matter of this collection of essays which sets out to explore the new forms of writing and hybrid identities emerging from both past and contemporary cultural contact and exchange in the 'South Seas'. This is also a weaving of the connections between Francophone and Anglophone writers long separated by colonial history. Luis Cardoso, writing in Portuguese from East Timor offers further points of contrast. The places of encounter - the beaches of Tahiti, the retelling of the texts of oral tradition, indigenous mastery of writing and appropriation of Western technology, the construction of contemporary Pacific anthologies or emerging post-colonial writing and translation - are sites of interaction and mixing that also involve negotiations of mana or power. From Pierre Loti's mythical and feminised Tahitians to Déwé Gorodé's silenced women, the outcomes of such negotiations are dynamic and different syncretisms. Two chapters reexamine the theoretical concept of hybridity from these Pacific perspectives. Les articles publiés dans le présent recueil explorent les nouvelles formes d'écriture et les identités hybrides issues du creuset des Mers du Sud. Relativement inconnus, les textes au coeur de ces articles n'en sont pas moins les oeuvres fondatrices de la région du Pacifique Sud dont ils constituent la trame historique et littéraire. Longtemps tenus à l'écart les uns des autres par l'histoire coloniale de la région, les textes d'auteurs francophones et anglophones s'enchevêtrent et se recoupent en de multiples domaines. La reprise des textes de tradition orale, l'appropriation autochtone des technologies occidentales, la création d'anthologies contemporaines et l'émergence d'une littérature postcoloniale, sont autant de sites d'interactions et de convergence qui exigent une négociation permanente entre les pouvoirs et mana en présence. C'est une nouvelle facette du concept d'hybridité que nous proposent ces études de la région Pacifique.

The essays in Writing between the Lines explore the lives of twelve of Canada’s most eminent anglophone literary translators, and delve into how these individuals have contributed to the valuable process of literary exchange between francophone and anglophone literatures in Canada. Through individual portraits, this book traces the events and life experiences that have led W.H. Blake, John Glassco, Philip Stratford, Joyce Marshall, Patricia Claxton, Doug Jones, Sheila Fischman, Ray Ellenwood, Barbara Godard, Susanne de Lotbinire-Harwood, John Van Burek, and Linda Gaboriau into the complex world of literary translation. Each essay-portrait examines why they chose to translate and what linguistic and cultural challenges they have faced in the practice of their art. Following their relationships with authors and publishers, the translators also reveal how they have defined the goals and the process of literary translation. Containing original, detailed biographical and bibliographical material, Writing between the Lines offers many new insights into the literary translation process, and the diverse roles of the translator as social agent. The first text on Canadian translators, it makes a major contribution in the areas of literary translation, comparative literature, Canadian literature, and cultural studies.

Alors que la notion meme de litterature suppose un travail d'ecriture et pose le probleme du statut de l'ecrivain, on s'interroge rarement sur les structures mentales que requiert l'acte d'ecrire, sur l'ecrit comme instrument de communication, voire d'action, sur les ressources de l'ecrit. Ces questions sont d'une importance toute particuliere pour Rome et dans le moment charniere constitue par la fin de la Republique. Comment Rome est-elle passee d'une societe largement orale au debut de la Republique a une societe ou l'on a eu, comme le dit Horace, la fureur d'ecrire? Pourquoi certains auteurs ont-ils voulu conserver certaines de leurs oeuvres par ecrit? Comment les Romains ont-ils abandonne un certain dedain a l'egard de l'ecrivain pour admettre une veritable gloire litteraire et permettre a l'auctor de se hisser presque au meme rang que le magistrat et le chef d'armee? Partant du choc culturel qu'a represente l'ambassade de Carneade en 155 et se poursuivant jusqu'a la fin de l'epoque ciceronienne, cet ouvrage brosse le tableau des evolutions qu'ont connues durant cette periode les statuts successifs ou concomitants de l'ecrivain et de l'ecrit, la hierarchisation des oeuvres et des genres, la nature du lectorat qu'il faut voir comme un co-auteur ou co-acteur de l'oeuvre. L'etude proposee montre en particulier combien les evenements historiques, les mutations societales, l'evolution des mentalites ont modifie le rapport a l'ecriture et a l'ecrit des auteurs et des lecteurs, la maniere de concevoir des discours, des ouvrages historiques, des traites, des poemes et des pieces de theatre. Il convient de lire cet ouvrage non comme une histoire de la litterature latine qui viendrait s'ajouter a tant d'autres, mais comme une histoire des ecrivains qui ont fait, dans les deux derniers siecles de la Republique, la litterature ecrite et ont ete les acteurs d'une veritable revolution culturelle.
