European settlers in Canada, Australia and South Africa said they were building ‘better Britains’ overseas. But their new societies were frequently threatened by devastating wars, rebellions, epidemics and natural disasters. It is striking that settlers turned to old traditions of collective prayer and worship to make sense of these calamities. At times of trauma, colonial governments set aside whole days for prayer so that entire populations could join together to implore God’s intervention, assistance or guidance. And at moments of celebration, such as the coming of peace, everyone in the empire might participate in synchronized acts of thanksgiving. Prayer, providence and empire asks why occasions with origins in the sixteenth century became numerous in the democratic, pluralistic and secularised conditions of the ‘British world’.

In this profound and moving book, Wilkinson explores the mystery of divine providence and its relationship to prayer. Drawing on Scripture, theology, and personal experience, he argues that prayer is not only a means of communication with God, but also a way of participating in God's providential plan for the world. With its rich insights and practical guidance, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of prayer and God's presence in the world. Excerpt from Certitude, Providence, and Prayer II. From natural science. It is alleged that all nature, physical and psychical, can be accounted for by cause and law and development, which are shown to prevail universally. The mistakes thus arising I have endeavored to expose in No. II. Of this series, where I have sought to clear up the subject of cause; and in N O. III., where I have shown that development is an organized causation having a wide field, but at the same time decided limits, and being simply a method by which God works.
