This First Book of Practical Studies is designed to develop chord consciousness and to provide additional experience in the fundamental rhythms, key signatures and articulations and to improve accuracy in reading through the use of interesting and melodic studies. It may be used either to supplement or to follow any beginning method book.

The material in the Gekeler Method for Oboe is divided in two parts. The studies in Part I are for the purpose of developing musical style and interpretation; those in Part II are for the study of scales and intervals, and for improvement of articulation.

The primary purpose in presenting this method for publication was to make available a book that did not progress too rapidly for beginners, one that taught proper oboe fingerings, and one that presented logical progression of rhythmical problems.
