Excerpt from Practical Astronomy When we cast our eyes to the heavens on any clear and, by preference, moonless night, our attention is attracted by apparently in numerable points of light, of all degrees of brightness. These are the stars, which in all ages have drawn to themselves the attention of mankind. Mr. E. W. Maunder, in a previ ous volume of this series, has Shown how man's attention was first directed to the heavenly bodies, and how the mere recognition of the phases of the Moon, the varying positions of the planets and the seasonal changes Of the stars has developed stage by stage into the science of astronomy as we know it at the present day. Excerpt from Practical Astronomy for Engineers The numerical solutions for most of the examples have been printed in detail in order better to illustrate both the application of the formula involved and the operations to be performed by the computer. Care has been taken to secure accuracy in the text as well as in the examples, but a considerable number of errors have already been noted. For these the reader is referred to the list of errata on page 132. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to Practical Astronomy: With a Collection of Astronomical Tables It is believed, therefore, that Practical Astronomy is destined to occupy a more prominent place in our institutions of educa tion than it now holds, and it is hoped that the present volume may contribute something to so desirable a result. Excerpt from Text-Book on Practical Astronomy The purpose of this volume is to furnish atext in Practical Astronomy especially adapted to the needs of civil-engineering students who can devote but little time to the subject, and who are not likely to take up advanced study of Astronomy. The text} deals chiefly with'the class of observations which can be made with surveying instruments, the methods applicable to astronomical and geodetic instruments being treated but briefly. It has been the author's intention to produce a book which is intermediate between the text-book written for the student of Astronomy or Geodesy and the short chapter on the subject generally given in text-books on Surveying. The subject has therefore been treated from the standpoint of the engineer, who is interested chiefly in obtaining results, and those refinements have been omitted which are beyond the requirements of the work which can be performed with the engineer's transit. This has led to the introduction of some rather crude mathematical processes, but it is hoped that these are presented in such a way as to aid the student in gaining a clearer conception of the prob lem without conveying wrong notions as to when such short-cut methods can properly be applied. The elementary principles have been treated rather elaborately but with a view to making these principles clear rather than to the introduction of refine ments. Much space has been devoted to the Measurement of Time because this subject seems to cause the student more difficulty than any other branch of Practical Astronomy. The attempt has been made to arrange the text so that it will be a convenient reference book for the engineer who is doing field work. Excerpt from An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy The plan of the work embraces only those practical methods which can be carried out by the use of portable instruments. The fact that it is primarily intended for use in the class-room, and not for field use, will explain the omission of many details connected with the making of observations, which, while important, can only be learned by the actual handling of instruments.
