“While Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, and Alfred Steiglitz photographed New York's sleek skyscrapers, Arthur Fellig (called Weegee) documented the seamy underside of depression-era New York. In this extraordinary book, Richard Meyer and Anthony Lee tell a gripping tale, filled with historical detail about Weegee's transformation from freelance newspaper photographer to fine artist with the publication of his enormously successful book Naked City, in 1945.”—Cécile Whiting, author of Pop L.A.: Art and the City in the 1960s “Lee and Meyer return Weegee to his 'working world' by exploring the multiple contexts of his production-the Photo League, the tabloids, the exhibition galleries, and the book market. The volume adds an important dimension to our understanding of how Weegee straddled the worlds of popular culture, photojournalism, and left politics."—Miles Orvell, author of American Photography and John Vachon's America: Photographs and Letters from the Depression to World War II (UC Press) “Groundbreaking. Anthony Lee and Richard Meyer delve deeply into a rich archive of media and exhibition history, criticism, and biography to arrive at original interpretations of the most enigmatic photographer in modern visual and print culture.”—Jordana Mendelson, author of Documenting Spain: Artists, Exhibition Culture, and the Modern Nation, 1929-1939

There's also a chapter on creating abstract art, Karen Sperling's specialty, having exhibited abstracts in New York art galleries.Additionally, Painting for Photographers shows how to paint with traditional acrylics and oils on top of the digital artwork after it's printed to canvas and includes a chapter by world-renowned artist and photographer Laurence Gartel about how to market the results.Painting for Photographers appeals to both professional photographers who would like to sell paintings to their clients and to hobbyists who are interested in painting photos of their kids and grandkids.

This album of historical photographs from a small Texas town captures for all time the various ethnic groups and immigrants who lived there from 1925 to 1945. From the late 1800s, almost every town in America supported at least one commercial photographer who inadvertently documented its history through formal portraits and special assignments around the community. Over the course of his career, Trlica, [son of] a Czech immigrant[s], built a similar visual archive of the social life of his adopted home of Granger, Texas. McCandless has done a very good job of selecting, arranging, and interpreting the photographs, all of which are reproduced in duotone. The result is a lovely and intriguing book. Equal Before the Lens will be of obvious interest and value in regional collections. However, because it deals with an overlooked area in American studies, it also deserves a place in social history and documentary photography collections. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. - Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll. Lib., Champaign, Ill. ©1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
