The Porcupine's Quill "Reader" celebrates and promotes the work of a small publishing house in the village of Erin, Ontario. The fact that authors published here have had four Governor General Award nominations in four years suggest that editor John Metcalf and publisher Tim Inkster must be doing something right. The "Reader" contains 20 short stories and assorted gossipy anecdotes and photographs of the authors giving readings and socializing. (And yes, this creates a feeling of being the voyeur at the family picnic, and yes, you might wonder why you would want to be a voyeur there of all places.) Inkster has long been known for quality book design and treats readers to brief arcane chats about typeface selection and paper size. Interesting if you like knowing why some books look and feel so much better than others, easy to skip if you don't.'

Born in 1934, Peter Gzowski covered most of the last half of the century as a journalist and interviewer. This biography, the most comprehensive and definitive yet published, is also a portrait of Canada during those decades, beginning with Gzowski's days at the University of Toronto's The Varsity in the mid 1950s, through his years as the youngest-ever managing editor of Maclean's in the 1960s and his tremendous success on CBC's Morningside in the 1980s and 1990s, and ending with his stint as a Globe and Mail columnist at the dawn of the 21st century and his death in January 2002. Gzowski saw eight Canadian Prime Ministers in office, most of whom he interviewed, and witnessed everything from the Quiet Revolution in Québec to the growth of economic nationalism in Canada's West. From the rise of state medicine to the decline of the patriarchy, Peter was there to comment, to resist, and to participate. Here was a man who was proud to call himself Canadian and who made millions of other Canadians realize that Canada was, in what he claimed was a Canadian expression, not a bad place to live.

Peter Porcupine has the brightest, longest, sharpest, and most beautiful quills of any porcupine in Beaver Valley. And unlike the other porcupines, he is polite, kind, and courteous. The only thing that makes him feel better than smiling is helping others, but it seems that the only way Peter can help his forest friends is by giving away his quills. Pretty soon, he has given away all but one quill, and he has no way to protect himself from predators. When Wicked Wolf attacks, Peter must rely on his friends to rescue him from danger. Thankfully, because of the generosity he has shown in the past, Peter has many, many friends willing to help. "Peter Porcupine One Quill" teaches children that daring to be different, when one is sure of being in the right, takes great courage but will ultimately be rewarded.
