Excerpt from Politics in the American Drama Man is a political animal who has always been fascinated by politics. Through the centuries he has expressed this absorption in many ways, and the theatre was one of the most appealing to man as author and audience. The great Greek Satirist, Aristo phanes (450-385 bc.) turned his bitter Shafts upon politics and politicians in plays that still have current application. His Lysistrata, a virulent anti-war drama, has been revived numerous times within our own century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Young America in the Hands of His Friends: A Political Drama Young America In The Hands Of His Friends Young America comes forward and speaks. I'm the most utterly bewildered man In all the world; between my wife and her father I'm driven distracted, and something must be done. Once more, for consolation, I'll ponder it out And tell you all about it, if you'll listen. It may be, as I've now and then observed, In just explaining my predicament I'll make it clear in some way to myself, And so escape from my perplexity. A happy thought! It lifts my load of care And shifts a moiety to the listener. Attend, then, to the burden of the tale. Excerpt from History of American Politics It might perhaps have been better to use the term broad constructionist instead of loose construction ist. But the latter had been used by all the earlier political writers, and it is hoped that no one will see anything invidious in a mere technical phrase. The reader's considerate judgment is requested upon all de ficiencies and omissions, beyond those which have been compelled by the necessity for condensation. Excerpt from The American Drama Since 1918: An Informal History The purpose of this book is to offer both a connected account and some critical evaluation of playwriting in America since the World War. It is by no means a complete record of theatrical production. Such a record for most of the period covered may be found in Mr. Burns Mantle's annual volumes. It does not always mention all the plays written by even highly successful or important authors. In certain cases the plays seem to me to have little or no significance. On the other hand the intention is to provide what the subtitle promises - an informal history - rather than an essay on this or that aspect of the contem porary American drama. A great many plays are discussed and the attempt is made to provide a con tinuous account of the course of playvvriting in the United States during the two decades ending with the present. I cannot, of course, hope that anyone will be entirely satisfied with either my inclusions or my omissions. For the task which I have undertaken. Excerpt from American Political History: To the Death of Lincoln Every book, it has been said, should have a preface wherein is offered an apology for presenting another literary venture. The excuse for this volume is the newly awakened interest in our country's past. It owes its origin to a course of parlor lectures which resulted from the remark of a cultured woman who entered actively into the opportunities of her New York life. I have attended, she declared, parlor classes for the study of the great men, the historical epochs, the music, the art, the literature, and even the drama of nearly every land of Europe, but remain lamentably ignorant of the history of my own country. Write a course of lectures upon the political history of the United States and I promise to form a class of women all as ill-in formed as I am, and equally anxious to learn. It was an appeal that demanded compliance, and the interest aroused by the lectures suggested a fuller treatment of the subject in a more permanent form. The thanks of the author are due to Professor E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, for some suggestions made after reading the manuscript. The book is sent forth in the hope that it will meet the demand for a concise ac count of our political history, and that it may prove of value to the man who votes, and to the woman who often influences the voter.
