This work brings together the study of political and literary thought in response to revolution in order to present an alternative view of the strength of liberalism generally and progressivism in particular. It re-examines the achievements of progressive thought about politics, history, nationhood, and literature, investigating the basis of the philosophical dispute between Conservative and left Liberals. The strong presence of progressive thought in Spain is affirmed. The study also underlines the importance for literary historians of understanding more sympathetically the contribution of Conservative Liberal thought to a recognizable Liberal Romanticism.

The essays consider the presence of such diverse phenomena as the dandy, nationhood, diasporic identity, operatic and dramatic personae and effects, trapeze artists, paintings, and the grotesque and fantastic in the work of a variety of writers from France, Germany, Spain, Britain, Russia, Greece and Italy. The volume argues for a view of the long nineteenth century as a century of lively cultural dialogue and exchange between national and sub-national cultures, between 'high' and popular art forms, and between different genres and different media, and it will be of interest to general readers and scholars alike.

Pascual de Gayangos (1809-97) celebrated Spanish Orientalist and polymath, is recognised as the father of the modern school of Arabic studies in Spain. He gave Islamic Spain its own voice, for the first time representing Spain's 'other' from 'within' not from without. This collection, the first major study of Gayangos, celebrates the 200th anniversary of his birth.Covering a wide range of subjects, it reflects the multiple fields in which Gayangos was involved: scholarship on the culture of Islamic and Christian Spain; history, literature, art; conservation and preservation of national heritage; formation of archives and collections; education; tourism; diplomacy and politics.
