The sermons, sayings and documents from the Nahj al-Balagha (the writings of Ali ibn Abi-Talib -- one of the prophet Muhammad's closest disciples) are now collected in one concise volume. These documents cover topics including "Conduct of Rule in Islam," which details the Islamic beliefs about justice and governance; "Morality and Conduct of Life in Islam," which describes the spiritual and ethical values embraced by Islam; and "Religion and State," which provides the reader with Islam's presiding beliefs regarding political philosophies throughout the ages. For scholars of Islam and those less well-versed in the religion's foundations, this guide is an excellent primer on Ali bin Abi-Talib's place in Islamic history.

The Service of mankind prepares a person for leadership - Ali Ibne Abi TalibThis book is a collection of Imam Ali Ibne Abi Talib's policy statements on the role and responsibilities of political leadership for good governance. Important administrative policy initiatives taken by Imam Ali and his guidelines for effective government as advocated in his writings and lectures to various governors and senior officials are the primarily focus of this work. The work benefits from extensive research sources and a reference is provided for every statement. Language has been kept simple while remaining loyal to the original tone, as authors have young readers in mind also. Imam Ali was both an educationist and a practitioner. His writings and speeches, especially during his time as Caliph (656 - 661 A.D), speak volumes about his progressive political vision. A just order founded on rational thinking, tolerance and equality was his ultimate goal. Special emphasis on the need for education was another critical pillar of his philosophy. He was looking much beyond his age and hence he built the intellectual foundations of a model government for future. The emphasis was on nurturing leaders, humane and accountable, who would establish institutions and focus primarily on the wellbeing of the ordinary people. In that sense his teachings are valuable for any student of politics and government anywhere in the world. Martyrdom narratives (maqtals) represent a prominent genre of Islamic, particularly Shiʽi, literature. In this genre, the heart-rending aspects of the martyrdom scenes of religiously prominent people are depicted graphically. Although not exclusively limited to the martyrdom accounts of Imam al-Ḥusayn and his companions, who were martyred on the plain of Karbala, Iraq, a great majority of Islamic martyrdom narratives deal with the Ashura episodes. As the first book-length treatment of this genre in English, this text takes the reader from the dawn of Islam in ancient Arabia, exploring the background of the Battle of Karbala and giving a view of the various maqtals and several related studies. Although examining Arabic and Persian sources, this book presupposes little background knowledge on the part of the reader.
