Excerpt from Plane and Spherical Trigonometry This book originated in a desire to give to my private pupils a better idea of the trigonometric functions of obtuse angles than they could obtain from any book with which I was acquainted, I believe that a student can get a comprehensive and thorough knowledge Of trigonometry most quickly and easily, if, at the outset, such definitions are given to the trigonometric functions as will apply to all angles with this idea for a basis, I have endeavored to prepare an elementary text-book for general use. By beginning with an explanation of the use of the negative sign as applied to lines and angles, and then giving general definitions to the trigonometric functions, I have been able to demon strate all the fundamental formulas in a perfectly general yet simple manner. Excerpt from A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry IN this edition, besides a number of minor changes, and the correction of some typographical errors, a very important modification has been made in the solution of the equation tan a: p tan y by series (p. Which was given in former editions in the usual form as stated by all writers on trigonometry. This form was dis covered to lack generality, and consequently to fail in certain applications, in con sequence of the omission of the arbitrary term mr now introduced. Several subse quent investigations, depending on this, have in like manner been rectified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Treatise on Plane and Spherical: Trigonometry IT is not easy to adapt a Treatise on Trigonometry to all descriptions of Students; to state, in its beginning, within a small compass, and with their simplest solutions, those Propositions which relate merely to the cases of oblique-angled triangles, and then, on the ground of those propositions and by the method of their solutions, to proceed to investigations of greater intricacy. The Student, if he be supposed to possess a knowledge of the first six Books of Euclid, may thence, by a few easy inferences, d by the aid of some simple constructions, arrive most readily at the Trigonometrical solutions of the cases of oblique-angled triangles. If his views extend no farther, he cannot take a better guide than Ludlam or Robert Simson; nor proceed by any easier method than the Geometrical. Excerpt from The Elements of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry If it is required, at a given point, to make an oh tuse angle of a given number of degrees, we produce the line through the given point, and make an angle on the line produced equal to the supplement of the given angle. Thus let it be required to make an angle of 100 at the point A in the given line A B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
