Elizabeth Blackwell, though born in England, was reared in the United States and was the first woman to receive a medical degree here, obtaining it from the Geneva Medical College, Geneva, New York, in 1849. A pioneer in opening the medical profession to women, she founded hospitals and medical schools for women in both the United States and England. Elizabeth Blackwell (February 3, 1821 - May 31, 1910) was a British physician, notable as the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, and was the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council. During her life, Blackwell played an important role in both the United States and the United Kingdom as a social awareness and moral reformer and pioneered in promoting education for women in medicine. The Elizabeth Blackwell Medal is awarded annually to a woman who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of women in medicine.

Owing to the efforts of Blackwell herself, and others described in this book, females began to be recognized, participate and study the medical profession. By the time Elizabeth Blackwell published these recollections, universities had already admitted many talented women who would go on to become great nurses and medical practitioners.
