Excerpt from Pilgrims of to-Day WE Americans are justly proud of our coun try, - its riches, its privileges, its opportunities. We say: Here in the United States people have more liberty than those of any other nation in the world. The poorest have the same rights as the possessors of great fortunes; the man without a penny and unknown to-day may, if he prove himself worthy, become at some future time the head of this Republic. No one can set a limit as to what another may accomplish in this free land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories of the Pilgrims A desire to know more of a story than these lessons gave, was another valuable result. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Time in which the awakened interest in people and events should be used to establish a firm basis for future reading and study in both biography and history. The Pilgrim Stories as originally written were read in a number of schools with the same satisfactory results. Now, carefully revised and graded in vocabulary, they are offered in book form with the hope that other pupils and teachers may use them with equal benefit and pleasure. Excerpt from The Story of the Pilgrims During the latter part of the year 1892 a number of companies, composed largely of young people, were formed in connection with Congregational churches in different parts of the United States for the study of the principles of Congregationalism and the history of the early Congregationalists. They took the name of Scrooby Clubs. The chapters of this book were written principally in order to aid such students and were printed week by week in The Congregationalist during the first six months of 1893 under the title Scrooby Club Sketches. They have been revised carefully and considerably expanded for republication as a book, and the twenty-fourth chapter is now added to the original series. They contain some facts believed to have been insufficiently, if at all, made known hitherto, although most of their material is familiar, particularly to special students of the subject. Excerpt from In the Days of the Pilgrim Fathers Just as there is great confusion between Pilgrims and Puritans, so it is far from clear to most Ameri cans that, for more than sixty years, that is from 1628 to 1691 when the Colony at Plymouth and that centering about Salem, Charlestown, and Boston, were merged' under one Constitution what we now call Massachusetts, consisted of two distinct colonies, two centers of life and influence, which, though separated geographically by only forty miles, were in every other respect very far apart. Almost the only thing which these two Colonies had in common was the allegiance which both conceded to England.
