Driven piles are the oldest known form of deep foundations, and remain the most reliable today. Vulcan Iron Works produced reliable, rugged pile hammers, some of which remain in service after a century in the field. Now the hammers and the piles are put together in a complete reference that discusses all of the various types of pile driving equipment, including air/steam, diesel, hydraulic, vibratory and others. Extensive material on accessories and leaders is also included. A description of the drivability analysis process has a worked example to make the concepts more easily understood. In addition to this, extensive resources from the Vulcan and Raymond library are included, including the User's Guide to Safe Operation, an expanded Data Manual, sections from the Raymond Superintendent's Handbook, and field service manuals for Vulcan onshore and offshore air/steam hammers, diesel hammers, vibratory hammers and the DGH series hammers.

The definitive reference for driven piles. Nearly six years in the making, Pile Driving by Pile Buck is a comprehensive reference book on the history of pile driving and driven piles, the various types of piles, the equipment used to install them, the design of driven pile foundations, the installation of driven piles and the capacity verification of driven piles. Not just another theoretical exercise, Pile Driving by Pile Buck gives practical procedures and equipment configurations for the successful installation of virtually any driven pile foundations. Included with the text are a wealth of photographs without equal in this type of publication; the photos alone are worth the price of the book, and help bring the reader "on site" to understand the whole process of pile driving--one of the oldest construction techniques known.

This synthesis report describes current practice in mitigating nighttime construction nuisances such as noise, vibration, light, and dust. Roadway construction work is increasingly done at night to mediate traffic congestion; however, this trend also increases the potential for disturbing adjacent property owners. This report will be of interest to department of transportation (DOT) construction, design, and project engineers, and to those responsible for community relations. This report of the Transportation Research Board stresses the importance of informing project neighbors and establishing cooperative relations with the community as a first measure of successful mitigation. Examples show how project design can address construction nuisances by locating and sequencing construction operations to minimize their impact. Current practices used in source control, path control, and receptor control are described and documented in examples from the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel project and projects in Arizona and Salt Lake City, Utah. Appended materials provide sample specifications for mitigation of noise and dust control.

This is a concise, systematic and complete treatment of the design and construction of pile foundations. Discusses pile behavior under various loadings and types of piles and their installation, including consideration of soil parameters. It provides step-by-step design procedures for piles subject to vertical loading and pullout, lateral, inclined and eccentric loads, or dynamic loads, and for piles in permafrost. Also describes load test procedures and their interpretation and buckling of long, slender piles with and without supported length. The closing chapter presents case histories of prediction and performance of piles and pile groups. Includes numerous solved problems.
