By covering fundamental painting principles and the basics of digital software, before moving into tutorials that break down key techniques, professional artist Carlyn Beccia encourages you to use the tools at hand to paint your own works of art. Each chapter showcases one great painter - the selection includes Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Sargent, Gustav Klimt, Matisse, and Picasso - and analyses the techniques that set each one apart. "Donatello, Titian, Hals, Turner, Renoir and Munch, and a surprisingly large number of other major artists, lived to be over seventy-five. Some of their finest and most distinctive works, including Michelangelo's last Pieta, Goya's Black Paintings and Monet's Water Lilies, were done in old age. Whether experimenting with new approaches, adopting new techniques, responding to changed circumstances and debilities, or reacting to the approach of death, the intensity of the late work of many of the greatest artists is striking. Childhood genius has often been studied but, astonishingly, this is the first book to draw attention to a considerably more important artistic phenomenon. Old Masters establishes beyond doubt the frequency with which elderly painters and sculptors reached new heights in their seventies and eighties and suggest why and how they did so."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Many of the exhibited works are among Europe's major paintings from the Renaissance to the end of the 18th century. The beginnings of the Gemäldegalerie can be traced back to the Saxon electors' Kunstkammer, founded in 1560. Through extensive purchases, August III was able to make it into a unique collection. The inventory of Italian Renaissance paintings is exceptional, including Raphal's "Sistine Madonna," Giorgione's "Sleeping Venus" and Titian's "The Tribute Money." Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century, by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Ruben and van Dyck, are another focus of the collection. Spanish, French and German paintings are also among the museum's art treasures.
