The Pictorial Atlas of Soilborne Fungal Plant Pathogens and Diseases describes the soilborne fungal diseases caused by Oomycetes, Zygomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Deuteromycetous (Anamorphic) fungi. Soilborne fungal diseases are significant as both environmental and agricultural problems, yet it is difficult to understand the ecology of pathogenic fungi and its effective control. This book provides very detailed information on many of the commonly and not so commonly encountered groups of soilborne fungi diseases. It will be a useful reference for those teaching and conducting research in mycology, plant pathology, soilborne plant diseases, and the ecology of fungal communities.

Fungi have come into demand as sources of biological control agents and of particular physiological active substances. Recent studies indicate that fungi can be the prime cause of sinusitis, asthma, and allergenic troubles. Some fungi can be useful however, and can be used to improve the overall quality of human life. With very few books available

In this atlas, 92 species of fungi and 8 nematodes are illustrated. In most cases the disease symptoms are shown from photographs taken in the Plant Pathology Laboratory. Each heading of the image plates consists of the botanical name of the pathogen and common name of the host plant, with the associated disease name shown in brackets where applicable.

Ideally a textbook should integrate with the lectures and labs in a science course. Select ing such a book can be an onerous (and sometimes impossible) task for the teacher. Students are wary of getting stuck with a "useless" book, i. e. , one to which the instructor never refers. The reader probably has some practical appreciation of their concern. I remem ber an instructor who not only denounced the very text he had chosen, but also informed the class that he wouldn't be using it. This was after I had already purchased a copy! Being mindful of the foregoing, I decided to try Barnes' Atlas and Manual of Plant Pathology in 1973. Six years and 800 students later I have no regrets about my choice. As far as I am concerned it is still the finest book of its kind on this continent. Barnes' Atlas contains an excellent blend of the diagnostic and experimental aspects of plant pathology. His treatment of each disease on an individual basis allows the instruc tor to omit some pathogens without disturbing the book's continuity. My one-semester course in Forest Pathology is largely descriptive. Strong emphasis is placed on field recognition of symptoms and signs. This is facilitated by Barnes' technique. In a sequence of photographs, the diseased plant or part is first viewed as a whole to show the general symptoms. This is usually followed by a close-up ofthe signs (i. e.

Instructors, students and researchers in plant pathology have been searching for a primary text that combines an informal, easy-to-read style with a thorough introduction to the concepts and terminology of plant pathology. Plant Pathology Concepts and Laboratory Exercises answers their demand by presenting pathology principles, protocols and procedures, serving as a valuable resource tool for both students and researchers. This guide explains definitions of disease, characteristics of organisms that cause disease, and how diseases interact with hosts and the environment. Each topic is addressed by an expert in the field, and is supported by one or more lab exercises. The structure of the text allows for easy reading, with references minimized and major concepts highlighted at the beginning of each chapter. The laboratory exercises give added flexibility to instructors. There are experiments for both beginning and advanced students, and a broad choice of exercise topics that can be selected based upon the focus within each individual class. Step-by-step instructions are provided for each laboratory exercise.
