The Symposium was initiated in 1977 by Dr. M.G. CHABERT, Directeur des plans et programmes du C.E.T.I.M. His death, which occurred a few weeks before the Symposium, was deeply felt by all participants, who decided to dedicate this volume to his memory. The purpose, as set out by Dr. CHABERT, was to bring together people speaking the language of research and the language of industry in discussing problems of structural analysis. The Centre Technique des Industries M~caniques (C.E.T.I.M.) at Sen1is was considered a suitable place for organizing such a meeting. Modern structural analysis, aided by high speed computers, is mainly concerned with non-linear phenomena, such as plasticity, visco-plasticity, damage and fracture mecha nics. Scientists involved in research in this field also speak two different languages: that of material analysts and that of structural analysts. The Bureau of IUTAM had appointed the following Scientific Committee to implement the ideas proposed by Dr. CHABERT: J. LEMAITRE, Universite Paris VI, ENSET, Cachan, France Chairman J. Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

Static analysis is a special case of dynamic analysis. The main reason for using static or pseudo-static analysis is the simplicity of the design and the analysis itself. Many structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, ships, airplanes, and more are studied by a dynamic analysis, which is a more complicated and time-consuming analysis compared to a static one; such structures studied in this way are safer and their behavior is closer to reality. Thanks to the important evolution of computer science, numerical methods, and mathematical models, we are boldly confronting the analysis of the most complex structures with huge dimensions, all this in a few hours in order to have an exact behavior of these structures closer to reality through the use of static dynamics and analysis. Structural Dynamics and Static Nonlinear Analysis From Theory to Application is concerned with the challenging subject of structural dynamics and the hydrodynamic principle as well as nonlinear static methods of analysis for seismic design of structures. The chapters are arranged into three parts. The first deals with single-degree of freedom (DOF) systems. The second part concerns systems with multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) with which one can create analytical and mathematical models of the most complex structures, passing through the hydrodynamic principle with an application in real cases. The last part sheds light on the principle of nonlinear static methods and its application in a real case. This book is ideal for academics, researchers, practicing structural engineers, and research students in the fields of civil and/or mechanical engineering along with practitioners interested in structural dynamics, static dynamics and analysis, and real-life applications.

Many types of engineering structures exhibit nonlinear behavior under real operating conditions. Sometimes the unpredicted nonlinear behavior of a system results in catastrophic failure. In civil engineering, grandstands at sporting events and concerts may be prone to nonlinear oscillations due to looseness of joints, friction, and crowd movements.

"Continuum Damage Mechanics and Numerical Applications" presents a systematic development of the theory of Continuum Damage Mechanics and its numerical engineering applications using a unified form of the mathematical formulations in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. The theoretical framework is based on the thermodynamic theory of energy and material dissipation and is described by a set of fundamental formulations of constitutive equations of damaged materials, development equations of the damaged state, and evolution equations of micro-structures. According to concepts of damage-dissipation of the material state and effective evolution of material properties, all these advanced equations, which take nonsymmetrized effects of damage aspects into account, are developed and modified from the traditional general failure models so they are more easily applied and verified in a wide range of engineering practices by experimental testing. Dr. Wohua Zhang is a Professor at Engineering Mechanics Research Center in Zhejiang University of China. Dr. Yuanqiang Cai is a Professor at Department of Civil Engineering in Zhejiang University of China.

To our sons, Mike, Andrew, Alex, who did not inherit their fathers' level of interest in applied mechanics, but who became sophisticated in software development and in this regard surpassed their parents. A.P., V.S. Hard times came, the god5 got angry. Children do not behave themselves and everybody wishes to write a book. Ancient Babylonian inscription X Preface Preface to the English Edition The book you are reading is a translation from Russian into English. Within a pretty short term this book saw two editions in Russian. The authors received in spiring responses from readers that both stimulated our continuing and improving this work and made sure it would not be in vain of us to try to multiply our readers by covering the English-speaking engineering community. When we prepared the present edition, we took into account interests of the Western readers, so we had to make some changes to our text published earlier. These changes include the following aspects. First, we excluded a lot of references and discussions regarding Russian engi neering codes. It seems to us those are of no real interest for Western engineers oriented at Eurocode or national construction design regulations.
