Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for all organisms. However, there is a P paradox, whereby P concentrations considered deficient in some environments such as in agricultural soils are considered excessive in water, where they trigger eutrophication. Ensuring adequate P for crop production while minimizing water quality degradation requires consideration of the P continuum from soils to freshwater and oceans. It also requires an international, interdisciplinary approach to monitoring and scientific research. This eBook brings together P studies in soil science, lakes, rivers, estuaries and oceans, with 74 authors from 12 countries in Asia, Europe and North America. The papers assembled here provide important new information to address knowledge gaps, cover P forms and cycling in soil and water, and identify key priorities for future research. Thus, the papers assembled here provide current and interdisciplinary information about P forms and their cycling along the soil-freshwater-ocean continuum, which is essential for environmentally sustainable P use.

Many of the pollutants discharged into the sea are directly or indirectly the result of human activities. Some of these substances are biodegradable, while others are not. This study is devoted to monitoring areas of the environment. Methods assessment is based on monitoring data and an evaluation of the impact of pollution.Surveillance provides a scientific basis for standards development and application. The methodology of marine pollution control is governed by algorithms and models. A monitoring strategy should be put in place, coupled with an environmental assessment concept, through targeted research activities in areas identified at local and regional levels. This concept will make it possible to diagnose the state of "health" of these zones and consequently to correct any anomalies. Monitoring of the marine and coastal environment is based on recent methods and validated after experiments in the field of marine pollution.

This book describes a pathway for sustainable phosphorus management via the Global Transdisciplinary Processes for Sustainable Phosphorus Management project (Global TraPs). Global TraPs is a multi-stakeholder forum in which scientists from a variety of disciplines join with key actors in practice to jointly identify critical questions and to articulate what new knowledge, technologies and policy processes are needed to ensure that future phosphorus use is sustainable, improves food security and environmental quality and provides benefits for the poor.
