The topics presented at the XIIIth Symposium embraced all aspects of perimetric science. A total of ten sessions were held and covered: fundamentals of perimetry, visual psychophysics, new perimetric techniques, new algorithms for estimating threshold, perimetric variability, color perimetry, optic nerve head imaging, and visual field investigation in glaucoma and in retinal and neurological disorders. The new perimetric techniques included frequency doubling technology, flicker perimetry and pupil perimetry. The new algorithms included the Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm (SITA) and Tendency Orientated Perimetry (TOP). The session on perimetric variability addressed some of the issues contributing to short-term fluctuation, and also contained papers on the use of univariate linear regression of point-wise sensitivity against time to follow-up for the identification of progressive visual field loss. The session on color perimetry was almost exclusively concerned with Short Wavelength Automated Perimetry (SWAP), particularly in glaucoma and high risk ocular hypertension. However, one group described a seemingly promising additional use for SWAP; namely, in the detection of diabetic macular edema. The presentations within the imaging session described the latest morphometric and topographic parameters derived by optic nerve head and nerve fiber layer analysis, and compared these structural measures with those of the functional assessment.

Perimetry Update 2002/03 contains a selection of paper presented at the 15th Visual Field Symposium of the International Perimetric Society (IPS) meeting held in Stratford upon Avon, England, from 26-30th June 2002. The meeting, titled 'Perimetry and Imaging in Shakespeare's Country', was hosted by Professor John Wild of Cardiff University.

Visual Fields: Examination and Interpretation, 3rd edition contains revisions and updates of earlier material as well as a discussion of newer techniques for assessing visual field disorders. The book begins with a short history of the field of perimetry and goes on to present basic clinical aspects of examination and diagnosis of visual field defects in the optic nerve, optic disc, chorioretina, optic chiasm, optic tract, lateral geniculate field bodies, and the calcarine complex. Additional aspects of visual field examination are explored including those of monocular, binocular, and junctional field defects, congruity vs. incongruity, macular sparing vs. macular splitting, density, wedge-shaped homonymous field loss, and monocular temporal crescent. Various new techniques of automated perimetry are also considered including SITA, FASTPAC, and SWAP. This volume provides a very useful overview of the techniques of visual field examination in a number of eye disorders and will be of interest to all ophthalmologists, neuro-opthalmologists, retina specialists, and optometrists.

Glaucoma is a group of disorders characterised by an abnormally high intraocular pressure (IOP), which can damage the optic nerve and lead to blindness. Glaucoma occurs in several forms: chronic open-angle (primary), acute angle-closure, congenital (inherited as an autosomal recessive trait), and secondary to other causes. Chronic open-ended glaucoma constitutes about 90% of the instances of glaucoma and is frequently familial in nature. Congenital glaucoma can be triggered by varicella, mumps, parvovirus, HIV and herpes among others. Secondary glaucoma can result from trauma and drugs such as steroids. This new book includes within its scope the prevention, pathogenesis, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. International research efforts are reported.
