Children and young people in care rarely match the academic achievements of their peers and policy and procedures to address this inequality have not yet remedied the problem. Drawing on ideas from social pedagogy, the authors present a new approach - learning placements and caring schools. They show that education and care must be considered integral to both out of home placements and schools. Packed with practice examples, it includes chapters on early childhood education and care, as well as alternatives to school and higher education, covering everything from birth up to the age of 25. It highlights the potential benefits of a range of learning opportunities, from drama and outdoor activities, to bedtime stories and mentoring as well as providing support for teachers in their role as carer. Chapters include key points, case studies, practice points and useful resources. This is a unique evidence-informed practical guide for students and professionals in the fields of social work, social care, psychology and education.

A Third Collection, prepared for the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan by editors Robert M. Doran and John D. Dadosky, is a helpful companion to volumes four and thirteen in the series. The volume contains fifteen papers, written between 1974 and 1982, and includes some of his most important shorter writings such as "Prolegomena to the Study of the Emerging Religious Consciousness of Our Time" and "Natural Right and Historical Mindedness." The relevant archival entries are specified, so that readers can consult them. The papers in this volume rehearse in a new key the themes of a lifetime. Without in any way going back on the major emphases of Lonergan's early work–cognitional theory and then the exploration of a fourth, existential level of consciousness– they are focused more on love and on the movement from above downwards in consciousness. Community is emphasized as the context and the fruit of the emergence of authentic subjects.

First published in 1976, Caring for Elderly People rapidly established itself as a standard guide for anyone dealing on a day-to-day basis with the elderly. This updated and revised edition, originally published in 1990, contains information on financial help and services and on the new technology available at the time. The book concerns itself primarily with elderly people who are either living alone or with relatives. In addition to setting out the practical steps to be taken in the treatment of illness (such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, bronchitis, etc.), the author explains why elderly people cannot cope with apparently simple operations, and why they act in a certain way. An extensive list of aids and gadgets, ancillary and community services, is designed to provide supportive advice to relatives and professionals alike, and to encourage the maximum possible self-reliance in the elderly.

Design education and practice are inherently social from process to implementation. This book explores the transformation in design education, as educators prepare their students to address complex social design problems for all people in society. This seven-chapter volume provides the reader with a range of viewpoints on the role of design education in shaping the world. The book begins with the overarching potential of design to address the needs of an increasingly complex society and the importance of worldview that underpins education methodology. Each chapter addresses a context that varies by discipline – architecture, graphic, packaging and interior design – and location – Nigeria, Canada, Lebanon, UK and USA. The authors pull back the curtain on their educational methods and provide the reader with a candid view of their teaching outcomes. The needs of the marginalized – victims of Asian hate, students with dyslexia, tomato farmers and even design students themselves – are brought into focus here. These specific places and peoples provide a design context that can be translated to other situations in design education and practice. Design educators and practitioners of many design disciplines will benefit from the philosophical discussions and the practical education examples offered here. This volume can contribute to transforming design education that will one day transform design practice to place a greater emphasis on the needs of the forgotten in society.
