The eighteenth annual British HCI Conference chose as its theme Design for Life. 'Life' has many facets, from work (of course, or should we say inevitably!) to travel, fun and other forms of leisure. We selected 23 full papers out of 63 submitted, which covered our interaction with computer systems in a variety of types of life situation — including games, tourism and certain types of work — and also covered a variety of stages in our lives, from the young to the elderly. These papers were complemented by others that described more traditional aspects of research in the field of human-computer interaction. In putting together the programme we followed a three-stage process. First each paper was reviewed by at least three reviewers. Then a member of the committee conducted a meta-review. Finally, all sets of reviews were considered by the technical chairs who assembled a programme that was submitted to, and approved by, the full committee. This process was greatly assisted by the use of the Precision Conference Solutions web-based submission system. Even more important, of course, were the volunteer reviewers themselves. In recognition, this year we have made an award for the best reviewer as well as one for the best paper.

Our society has entered a data-driven era, one in which not only are enormous amounts of data being generated daily but there are also growing expectations placed on the analysis of this data. Some data have become simply too large to be displayed and some have too short a lifespan to be handled properly with classical visualization or analysis methods. In order to address these issues, this book explores the potential solutions where we not only visualize data, but also allow users to be able to interact with it. Therefore, this book will focus on two main topics: large dataset visualization and interaction. Graphic cards and their image processing power can leverage large data visualization but they can also be of great interest to support interaction. Therefore, this book will show how to take advantage of graphic card computation power with techniques called GPGPUs (general-purpose computing on graphics processing units). As specific examples, this book details GPGPU usages to produce fast enough visualization to be interactive with improved brushing techniques, fast animations between different data representations, and view simplifications (i.e. static and dynamic bundling techniques). Since data storage and memory limitation is less and less of an issue, we will also present techniques to reduce computation time by using memory as a new tool to solve computationally challenging problems. We will investigate innovative data processing techniques: while classical algorithms are expressed in data space (e.g. computation on geographic locations), we will express them in graphic space (e.g., raster map like a screen composed of pixels). This consists of two steps: (1) a data representation is built using straightforward visualization techniques; and (2) the resulting image undergoes purely graphical transformations using image processing techniques. This type of technique is called image-based visualization. The goal of this book is to explore new computing techniques using image-based techniques to provide efficient visualizations and user interfaces for the exploration of large datasets. This book concentrates on the areas of information visualization, visual analytics, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction. This book opens up a whole field of study, including the scientific validation of these techniques, their limitations, and their generalizations to different types of datasets.

Services and products are increasingly composed of interconnected computerized things with embedded sensors and interaction capabilities. This trend is evident also in everyday objects and tools and is rapidly changing the way we live our lives. Design work and designers have to keep up with this development and adapt both thinking and tools. The problem is no longer just to design a physical object or interact with a single computational device and design is not even limited to the service embedding the device. Design needs to include all of the above while, importantly, also taking the particular context of use into account. This book presents a framework and a number of tools from a systems perspective that will help the designer take the step from designing a thing or a web site to designing a context aware pervasive service. As a first basis for this, three complementary interactors; Human, Information and Thing, along with the interactions they enable are introduced. This basis is used to infuse a way of thinking on pervasive services that is reapplied also to groups and joint ventures. Services are thoroughly introduced in the book along with their support, ranging from networked infrastructure for communication to cognitive by artificial intelligence. The design process is introduced by a discussion on the goals for design. Usability, value based design and meaningful user experiences are surveyed as guides for better designs. Beginning with the resultant understanding, the design process is staged using the levels of service design, requirement analysis, concept, information, interaction, and appearance design. Relevant tools and an outline of the possible design space of mobile and pervasive applications are given for each level, and the design work is framed by an overall story-based approach. In total the book consists of 658 pages, 112 figures and 218 illustrations. Both text and ideas have improved from the third edition. One year Weiser. Håkan Gulliksson is a lecturer on Interaction technology and Mobile design at Umeå University Sweden.
