Pediatrics in Chinese Medicine is different from any English TCM pediatrics textbook available today, and also different from standard TCM pediatrics textbooks as written in China. As an important part of TCM clinical medicine, the essence of TCM pediatrics emphasizes the overall concept of treatment based on pattern differentiation as associated with the interchange of yin and yang, integration of form and spirit, zang-fu organ and channel theory, formulas studies, and dietary therapy and nursing, all of which guide the clinical practice of TCM pediatrics. On the basis of traditional textbooks on TCM pediatrics, and in consideration of our readership, we have added extra material on acupuncture and Tui Na. In the process of selecting diseases, we have listed those for which TCM treatments are effective and distinctive, while also taking into account the worldwide incidence of childhood diseases. For the student’s convenience, the appendices include the dosages of Chinese medicinals and formulas, patent Chinese medicines for common pediatric diseases, an index of diseases names, and commonly used English and Chinese terms. We are sorry that the DVD content are not included.

Seven years in the making, Dr. Zhongs Pediatric Essentials opens with an introduction to the history of pediatric applications of Chinese medicine techniques, going back to 168 BCE. The author discusses how childrens physiology differs from adult physiology, and notes the unique aspects of the onset, types, and evolution of disease in pediatric medicine. The author offers useful, complete descriptions of physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for the various organ systems from newborns through adolescents. Separate chapters cover infectious diseases, parasitosis, and a dozen specific syndromes such as profuse sweating, night crying, and growth disorders. In each example, detailed diagnostic guidelines are accompanied by a description of the therapeutic principle governing treatment and a list of specific TCM formulas, including herbs, Tui Na, moxibustion, and acupuncture, as well as advice about prevention and use of patent medicines. Dr. Zhong has been learning, practicing, researching, and teaching traditional Chinese medicine pediatrics for three decades. TCM Pediatrics is concerned with children’s growth and development along with physiological and pathological conditions and their treatment with traditional Chinese medicinals, acupuncture, tui na and other therapeutic methods. As an important TCM clinical discipline with distinct features, the study of Chinese Medical Pediatrics links closely with other basic and clinical courses and also plays a vital role in enhancing students’ clinical thinking and practice in general. This book is mainly intended as a tool to be employed in the teaching of TCM. Following each case, there are exercises with questions broadly based on the disease category in order to compensate for the lack of breadth offered by a single case. In this way, the student is given the opportunity to review and consolidate their basic knowledge of the disease. The cases here are compiled mainly by pediatricians from Hunan University of Chinese Medicine who have long been engaged in clinical practice and teaching, and all cases involve commonly seen conditions in the TCM pediatric department.
