It could be alleged that present-day French linguistics is characterized by a specific connection between the epistemology of text and that of discourse. The contributions gathered in this volume aim to reconsider this link – or dichotomy? – in light of the latest research developments. They are organized in three parts: the first explores the text-discourse connection, while the second and third tackle the epistemologies of text and discourse.

Irony and Humor: From pragmatics to discourse is a complete updated panorama of linguistic research on irony and humor, based on a variety of perspectives, corpora and theories. The book collects the most recent contributions from such diverse approaches as Relevance Theory, Cognitive Linguistics, General Theory of Verbal Humor, Neo-Gricean Pragmatics or Argumentation. Ce numéro, réservé à un fait de langue plutôt qu'à une école théorique, s'adresse en priorité à tous ceux - étudiants de master ou de concours, chercheurs débutants ou confirmés - qui sont intéressés par la question de l'ordre des mots et de l'inversion du sujet (V-S ou LOC-V-S ou ADJ-V-S) dans la phrase assertive. Le but des responsables du volume (Christine Copy & Lucie Gournay) a été de regrouper dans un même recueil des articles ou des synthèses relevant d'approches différentes sur un phénomène qui est largement débattu en ce moment par un bon nombre de linguistes, en particulier par les linguistes énonciativistes. Au-delà des clivages théoriques, ou de la variété des disciplines, il a semblé pertinent de regrouper sous une même couverture les problématiques et les hypothèses formulées par les spécialistes de la question. En effet, toutes les contributions proviennent de chercheurs qui ont déjà travaillé sur des problèmes d'agencement de phrases. De plus, dans chaque contribution, il est fait mention des acquis des approches " adverses "... et l'on se rend compte que la confrontation va de pair avec une certaine complémentarité. Ainsi cet ouvrage a une double ambition : concerner tous ceux qui travaillent sur l'ordre des mots en français et en anglais, apporter une contribution non négligeable à la comparaison des idées en linguistique.

Media coverage of scientific issues is a highly complex process. It involves making a specialized field accessible to the general public, without necessarily disseminating the associated scientific terms or knowledge. The terminological interactions between press discourses and scientific knowledge are presented within the field of agroecology. The analysis of textual data focuses on articles in the general press in French and English, devoted to plant protection practices using natural mechanisms (biological control). This book provides a terminological and cognitive overview of the issues involved in popularizing science in a rapidly expanding field, and of the challenges to be met in the constantly evolving environmental communication sector.

This study examines the linguistic tools which enable speakers and writers to propose adjustments and re-adjustments of the sentences they’ve just produced, as well as the goals they fulfil by doing so. We examine corrections, reformulations, specifications, modifications of points of views and link them with discursive strategies. (Re)-adjustments can be made in order to express oneself in a better way, to favor comprehension by adapting to the addressee, to structure one’s intervention, to play on the potentialities of language (polysemy, homonymy, ambiguity), to mention the main purposes associated with the use of those devices. The study focuses on the markers associated with those strategies. Therefore, it links the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels.

Expressing location is one of the most common linguistic tasks that we perform in our daily lives. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis into how speakers of English and French use gesture as well as speech when describing where objects are located. It shows that spoken locative expressions are made up of both speech and gesture components, and that the two modalities contribute in a complementary fashion to convey locative meaning.
