In the early 1980s, John Pakenham walked a total of 1,500 miles, with a series of companions from the local Turkana and Samburu tribes and their long-suffering donkeys, around a lake in the Great Rift Valley of northern Kenya. Repeatedly beset by extreme thirst and dehydration, bitterly cold torrential rains, poisonous spiders, vindictive mosquitoes and the ever-present threat of bandits, not to mention a fatal fight between two of his companions, he was lucky to live to tell his tale. Pakenham's account provides a rare glimpse of a tough terrain and its even tougher inhabitants, where every day was a battle for survival. This edition represents a remarkable survival of the detail by which a member of the armoured class of late thirteenth-century Suffolk chose to provide for one of his younger sons. The Pakenham cartulary for the manor of Ixworth Thorpe in Suffolk is one of the few secular medieval cartularies to survive. It is especially deserving of attention for its demonstration of the importance families of the Pakenhamclass attached to the provision of inheritances for their younger sons. Thomas of Pakenham, the man for whom the cartulary was composed, was the second son of the knight Sir William of Pakenham; his elder brother Edmund was the main beneficiary of their father's estate, but it is clear that Sir William wished to provide for all his sons: the manor of Ixworth Thorpe was Thomas's inheritance. The charters collected in this cartulary represent the assets of Sir William in the vill, accumulated over a period of about fifty years, plus acquisitions made by Thomas after his father's death. This books focus is on the European side of his fathers line in England and maybe France, while his mothers side is from France and Germany, and not discussed very much. Most of the content is from documents mostly in the County Suffolk, England area and the book begins with the history of this PAGE line in Normandy, France area around the year 900 to the arrival of PAGE Family C in Virginia in the middle 1600s. He published CAROLINA PAGEs in 1990 which was about his PAGE line that arrived in Virginia in middle 1600s as they moved to North Carolina, then South Carolina, then Georgia, then Florida where he was born. Since DNA arrived on the scene in early 2000, much of the paper trail has been verified. DNA has provided about 15 different PAGE lines and around 44 individuals most of which have the surname PAGE in the PAGE Line C. Photographs are provided of the many English houses that the PAGE family lived in beginning in early 1400 to date.
