Oxygen-Ozone therapy is a complementary approach less known than homeopathy and acupuncture because it has come of age only three decades ago. This book clarifies that, in the often nebulous field of natural medicine, the biological bases of ozone therapy are totally in line with classical biochemistry, physiological and pharmacological knowledge. Ozone is an oxidizing molecule, a sort of super active oxygen, which, by reacting with blood components generates a number of chemical messengers responsible for activating crucial biological functions such as oxygen delivery, immune activation, release of hormones and induction of antioxidant enzymes, which is an exceptional property for correcting the chronic oxidative stress present in atherosclerosis, diabetes and cancer. Moreover, by inducing nitric oxide synthase, ozone therapy may mobilize endogenous stem cells, which will promote regeneration of ischemic tissues. The description of these phenomena offers the first comprehensive picture for understanding how ozone works and why. When properly used as a real drug within therapeutic range, ozone therapy does not only does not procure adverse effects but yields a feeling of wellness. Half the book describes the value of ozone treatment in several diseases, particularly cutanious infection and vascular diseases where ozone really behaves as a “wonder drug”. The book has been written for clinical researchers, physicians and ozone therapists, but also for the layman or the patient interested in this therapy.

With newer materials introduced in the field of dentistry from disinfection to wound healing, it is important to understand the need for introduction of a few materials and their action. One such material is ozone. It is a privilege to have had an opportunity to review the newly introduced material OZONE esp in the field of Prosthodontics. Its role in endodontics for disinfection of root canal system i.e., antimicrobial effect is widely accepted. This review book enables the readers to study and understand the utilization of ozone in the field in day today life.

This book covers two increasingly prominent aspects of dentistry: nanotechnology and ozone. Nanotechnology has rapidly expanded into all areas of science; it offers significant alternative ways of solving scientific and medical questions and problems. In dentistry, nanotechnology has been exploited in the development of restorative materials with significant success. The recent advances in nanotechnology could hold promise in bringing about a paradigm shift in the dental field. Although there are numerous complex therapies being developed to treat many diseases, their clinical use requires careful consideration of the expense of synthesis and implementation. The world is moving towards non-invasive methods of treatment and the principle of ‘extension for prevention’ is losing its popularity. The energized form of oxygen is ozone, which has varied properties like anti-microbial activity, biocompatibility, disinfection and healing properties. As such, this book shows that it has a major scope of application in the fields of medicine and dentistry.

At present, there is more and more persistently shown interest in drug-free treatment that can replace or significantly limit the need for drugs and thus affect various aspects of the pathological process, contribute to the regulation of disturbed homeostasis, improve the functional status of the various organs and systems that enhance the body's defenses. One of these methods is the therapeutic use of ozone which receiving considerable spread in our country and abroad. During the last 14 years, we have made a great effort to examine ozone therapy in a scientific fashion both at a basic and clinical level, and we now have some ideas how ozone acts, how and why its toxicity can be controlled and how therapeutic effects can be exerted. There is no need to invoke philosophical speculations because the mechanisms of action are in the realm of classical biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology. This review aims to give the reader the essential information about using ozone in general medicine and dentistry.

When I was about fifteen, my Biological Seiences teacher, Prof. N. Benacchio, lent me a book by Paul de Kruif "The Microbe Hunters" and I remained fascinated by infectious diseases. I was intrigued by the potency of virulent bacteria which are constantly trying to invade our bodies and often overcome what today we call innate and adoptive immunity. Indeed, shortly after that, I was struck by his tragic death due to peritonitis. Later, while studying medicine (although medical knowledge in the 1950s was almost primordial compared with today), I soon realised how the various biological systems were wonderfully organised but at the same time frail and how our life could end in a few minutes. Slowly it became obvious that our "wellness" was the result of a dynamic and very unstable equilibrium between health and disease. This unstable equilibrium could be broken forever if the body's response could not reverse the pathological state. I stuck a sort ofposter on the wall ofmy room with these three words and connecting arrows: HEALTH~-? DISEASE -? DEATH As I don't believe in another world after death, it became obvious to me that we should make every possible effort not only to delay death, but to try always to shift the equilibrium to the left. In this book, I will try to show that this can be achieved, as a last resort, even with ozonetherapy.
