Natural gas markets have undergone momentous changes, worldwide. This book updates and expands on the dynamics, performance and forward path of expanding natural gas use in the US and worldwide, including international trade. This book investigates the overall natural gas reform performance of Turkey, addressing both shortfalls and setbacks that have prevented Turkey from the fulfillment of the regulatory implementation since 2001, and how the prospectively liberalised natural gas market can effectively operate at all levels. Although eighteen years have passed since the introduction of the first legislation as a basis for a more liberalised Turkish natural gas market, the completion of the reform process still suffers from a lack of enforcement. The book offers recommendations to address this, the main one being that policy makers should give due consideration to the consolidation of EMRA’s independent role with appropriate safeguards laid out to prevent attempts of regulatory misuse. The book concludes by suggesting that there is a compelling need to move forward with a consolidated reform sooner rather than later if Turkey genuinely wishes to take a leadership position in the race to become an efficient gas hub and be part of Europe’s single energy market.

Recent upheaval in the global energy system – dramatic increases in demand led largely by developing countries, significant decreases in supply as a result of local or regional conflicts, and the growing nexus between the burning of hydrocarbons and climate change – has unsettled long-held notions of energy security. For many years, transatlantic cooperation helped undergird the system’s stability, but Europe and North America have drifted apart in several key ways, potentially undermining the search for energy sufficiency, surety, and sustainability. Will the transatlantic partners continue on separate paths in the face of dramatic change in the global energy system, or does the breadth and depth of the challenges they confront compel them to work more closely together? In this edited volume, experts from across Europe and North America – including advisors to the executive and legislative branches of both the EU and the United States, to senior military commanders, and to major international organizations and companies – examine the most salient facets of the transatlantic energy relationship and discern whether that relationship is characterized by growing convergence or divergence. This book was based on a special issue of the Journal of Transatlantic Studies.

A cloud of uncertainty currently looms over global energy markets as a number of politically charged scenarios continue to gather momentum, such as: the ongoing development and rising prominence of shale oil and gas in the United States; the sudden fall in global oil prices; simmering tensions between Russia and the West, which if left unchecked, could yet wreak considerable havoc upon transnational energy flows across Central and Eastern Europe; the challenge presented by the so-called “Islamic State” to energy interests in Iraq and Syria; and the prospect of Iran reannouncing itself on the global energy stage. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to determine the future composition of global energy markets, and the impact that current and indeed unforeseen geopolitical developments will have upon national, regional and international energy policy and decision-making. A number of question marks remain with regards to how such developments will affect production rates, pricing and energy security. The ECSSR 20th Annual Energy Conference, “Future Energy Trends: Innovation, Markets and Geopolitics,” held at the Center on November 18–19, 2014, and the resultant papers compiled in this volume, provide a variety of well-informed views that examine the notable paradigm shifts and transformations taking place within the energy sector. Added to this, the contributions offered in this edition collectively serve to highlight the notable repercussions being felt in the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere in the world as a result of the fraught relationship and blurring of the lines between energy policy and geopolitics. It would appear that producers and consumers alike are, to varying degrees depending on their geographical location, subsequently being held to ransom. Also discussed are key technological developments, such as those granting the United States greater room to maneuver on the difficult path towards achieving energy independence; in addition to the impressive strides that the United Arab Emirates continues to make, both in terms of renewable energy and its widely respected, peaceful nuclear energy program.

International Outlook 2016, an updated statistical reference with energy projections, is provided as a service to energy managers and analysts, both in government and in the private sector. The projections are used by international agencies, federal and state governments, trade associations, and other planners and decision makers. They are published pursuant to the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-91), Section 205(c). The report begins with a review of world trends in energy demand and the major macroeconomic assumptions used in deriving the International Energy Outlook 2016 (IEO2016) projections, along with the major sources of uncertainty in the projections, which extend through 2040. In addition to the Reference case projections, High Economic Growth and Low Economic Growth cases were developed to consider the effects of higher and lower growth paths for economic activity than are assumed in the Reference case. IEO2016 also includes a High Oil Price case and, alternatively, a Low Oil Price case. The resulting projections--and the uncertainty associated with international energy projections in general--are discussed in Chapter 1, "World energy demand and economic outlook." Projections for energy consumption and production by fuel--petroleum and other liquid fuels, natural gas, and coal--are presented in Chapters 2, 3, and 4, along with reviews of the current status of each fuel on a worldwide basis. Chapter 5 discusses the projections for world electricity markets--including nuclear power, hydropower, and other marketed renewable energy resources--and presents projections of world installed generating capacity. Chapter 6 presents a discussion of energy used in the buildings sector (residential and commercial). Chapter 7 provides a discussion of industrial sector energy use. Chapter 8 includes a detailed look at the world's transportation energy use. Finally, Chapter 9 discusses the outlook for global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. IEO 2016 focuses exclusively on marketed energy. Non-marketed energy sources,which continue to play an important role in some developiing countries, are not included in the estimates.
