Excerpt from Outlines of Lectures on the History of Philosophy The object of this manual is sufficiently indicated by its title, "Outlines of lectures on the History of Philosophy." It aims at no more than to present, in condensed form, a syllabus of the course, for review and recitation. For education, the learning to philosophize, what can be a substitute for the living guide, elucidating the students confused thought, and making him to grow in mind as he traces the development of human thought? It is surely enough to rest this on the pregnant words of the master; "nobler far is the serious pursuit of the dialectician who finds a congenial soul, and then with knowledge ingrafts and sows words which are not unfruitful, but have in them seeds which may bear fruit in other natures, nurtured in other ways, - making the seed everlasting, and the posessors happy to the utmost extent of human happiness." (Phaedr., p.276.) Text-books, surely, will not do this. In the history of philosophy, the lecturer will have a principle, a clue by which to guide his scholar. It may be a different one from what the best text books supply. The most scientific of these, if brief, will be the driest and most divorce philosophy from that out of which it springs, and on which it most powerfully re-acts, the progress of civilization, literature, art, politics, religion. Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Greek Philosophy On the other hand, however, these views do not remain confined to their first authors, they spread and maintain themselves in schools, and by means of writings; a scientific tradition is formed, the later members learn from the earlier, and through them are stimulated to the completion, continuation, and cor rection of their results, to the asking of new questions, and the search after new answers and methods. The systems of philosophy, however peculiar and self dependent they may be, thus appear as the members of a larger historical interconnection; in respect to this alone can they be perfectly understood; the farther we follow it, the more the individual becomes united to a whole of historical development, and the problem arises not merely of explaining this whole by means of the particular moments conditioning it, but. Excerpt from The Field of Philosophy: An Outline of Lectures on Introduction to Philosophy For some years past I have experimented and pondered as to the best method of giving an introductory course which might really introduce beginners to the basic problems and theories of philosophy and quicken them to some appreciation of the role played by philos Ophy in the whole movement of civilization, while, at the same time, giving them at least an inkling of the work of the greatest thinkers and arousing in them a desire to go to the sources. A course in the entire History of European Phil osophy, if seriously given, is beyond the reach of many beginners in the subject. Only the exceptional student can make much out of it. The others are bewildered by the rapid succession of theories not easily distinguishable and become confused as to the fundamental issues and standpoints. They are likely to carry away from the course the feeling that philosophy has no close relation to culture and everyday experience and that it is a be wildering mass of speculations shot out of the blue. The History of Philosophy should be a second course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of the Philosophy of Religion: Dictated Portions of the Lectures of Hermann Lotze The first translation of this volume, with the exception of Chapters II. To IV., was made by L. O. Brastow, D.D.: the editor is responsible for the translation of those three chapters and for the revision of the whole. The nature of both the subject and its treatment has made it pos sible to present this one of the series, with the exception of certain distinctively metaphysical por tions, in a form more easily intelligible to most readers than was possible in the case of the 'outlines of Metaphysic.'
