Excerpt from Outline in Geography The "sailor geography" of the past, with its burdensome details of isolated bits of information, has given way to methods that recognize geography as a logical study admirably adapted to train the perceptive powers, the imagination, the reason, as well as the memory of form and fact. While not necessarily the center from which all teaching should radiate, geography is easily and naturally correlated with other studies. It cannot be separated from nature study; indeed, in the primary grades 't 's little else. It furnishes a rich field for supplementary reading in school and at home. It provides descriptive language work of the simplest and most useful kind. In all grades it is closely connected with history. In comparing areas, lengths of rivers, etc., and in teaching drawing to scale, it furnishes many practical applications of number work.
