Excerpt from Outline Course of Study, 1927 The first step in the revision of the list of books for use in the ele mentary schools of the State is the preparation of an outline course of study to which all changes in the list must conform. The text-book Commission has prepared the following outline which will serve as a guide in the selection and adoption of books for the next five years. I hereby give my official approval, as directed by law, for the publication and use of this bulletin. Changes made in the course of study will become effective as the books are changed in the respective subjects. No adoptions made from the multiple lists submitted by the Commission can become effective for use before the school year 1928 - 29, as the books now on the list and the course of study now in use will be applicable to the school year 1927-28. As each major subject is dealt with from year to year, suggestions to teachers and detailed outlines of these subjects, as required by Section 39 of the School Code, will be prepared and published from time to time. Excerpt from New Haven Preparatory School, 1925-1927 The enrollment has increased from fewer than fifty students, at the beginning, to two hundred and fifty. To keep pace with this growth, the School has gradually developed a large and efficient teaching force; to do more thorough and intensive work, it has standardized and carefully outlined the courses of study. Mere numbers, however, afford no index to the worth of a school. That worth is determined rather by the quality of work the institution performs and this in turn depends on the character of its teachers and its students. The staff of New Haven Preparatory School consists of college and uni versity trained men of large teaching experience who know and are in sympathy with the aims and purposes of the stu dents. These latter constitute a body Of earnest men who have entered upon their educational work as a part of the business of life, rather than as a social accomplishment, and they come, in the main, from homes in which the habits of industry and economy are habitually fostered. They feel the necessity of increasing their vocational opportunities and usu ally enter the evening school with definite aims for the future. Practically all the students are engaged in work during the day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of Courses of Study: Revised Prospectus The fifth edition of the Educational Prospectus having become exhausted, it is necessary to issue its successor, and this has required a great deal of time and effort on the part of many experienced Association men and educational authorities. The former issue contained outlines and suggestions from experience, for thirty-three subjects and courses, while the present issue, or sixth edition, includes similar material for one hundred and fifteen. In gathering and arranging these outlines, from the best work of the kind among employed men and boys, the Committee has striven to make the result so valuable and practical that no educational director, general secretary, or teacher, can expect to do his best work without becoming familiar with the material of this book. For their patient and helpful cooperation in this work, the Committee is under obligation to the various International examiners, especially to Dr. T. M. Balliet, Prof. L. Rouillion, Prof. W. S. Perry, Prof. A. D. F. Hamlin, Prof. A. L. Williston; also to a number of the educational directors, especially A. G. Book waiter, G. B. Landis, J. G. Perkins, B. B. Farnsworth, R. P. Kaighn, A. D. Dean. This book will serve each Association best, not when its outlines are slavishly followed, but when it is used as the outlines direct and as per the suggestion below. Excerpt from An Outline of Individual Study This manual of methods for the study of the human individual is intended to serve a practical and introductory rather than a scientific purpose. It is not intended for students interested in research, but is for those who wish a first guide in the study of individuals. It is in one sense and not another that it is called practical. It does not contain much about standards and results of experiments, by means of which one can safely compare individuals with the average or norm, for the purposes of an exact or scientific pedagogy. It is intended to be practical in the sense that it is hoped that by it the student can be led to observe individuals more intelligently and systematically, and thus be the better able to understand and serve them. Incidentally it is to be hoped that some insight into the nature of individuality and the scientific study of it will be acquired. By 1939 Mao Zedong was a leader in the Chinese Communist Party through his political acumen, his organizing energy, and his executive ability. At the same time, his abilities to shift register, to maintain a sense of the whole and also of the particular, and to absorb seemingly contradictory realities in the social, political and military arenas he
