The embrace of the outdoors has been the cornerstone of my existence-a profound connection that began amidst the sprawling fields surrounding my childhood home in the heart of Texas. Those vast expanses became my canvas for exploration, nurturing an innate love for nature's grandeur and the infinite adventures it offered.Transitioning from a mere enthusiast to a seasoned guide leading expeditions into the wilderness marked a transformative phase in my life. Guiding others through the backcountry became not just a profession but an extension of my very being. Over the years, I've shepherded over 10,000 individuals into the untamed wilds, accumulating an impressive tally of more than two years spent residing under the canopy of stars in the confines of a tent.Yet, as every seasoned adventurer knows, the script rarely unfolds precisely as planned. In fact, I've come to realize that approximately 90% of the time, circumstances pivot away from our meticulously charted course. Despite the unexpected twists and turns that would seemingly throw a wrench into the gears of our plans, I've maintained a steadfast belief that these deviations are the very essence of adventure itself. In those moments of deviation, I've always stressed the importance of fostering a positive attitude-a beacon that guides us through the unforeseen challenges. It was within these experiences that the seeds for my book, "Out-lol-doors," were sown. I yearned to pen a compendium not just outlining practical advice for outdoor pursuits but infusing it with a comedic lens-a fusion of laughter and wisdom aimed at illuminating the practical aspects of outdoor recreation in an engaging and entertaining manner.

In 1898, the United States became an empire by accident due to our splendid little war against Spain. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the most famous men in America were not athletes or politicians; they were inventors and businessmen like Bell, Edison, Morgan, and Rockefeller. Teddy Roosevelt built the Panama Canal, launched the Great White Fleet, and became a Bull Moose. Woodrow Wilson was reelected in 1916 because He Kept Us Out of War! World War I began as a family feud between three European cousins named Georgie, Willie, and Nicky. The War to end all wars set the stage for World War II. Americas first female President was Edith Wilson, and our first Black President was possibly Warren Harding. Aside from Babe Ruth, Charles Lindbergh, Al Capone, Sigmund Freud, Emily Post, or Sinclair Lewis novels and Hollywoods movies, Calvin Coolidge personified the Roaring Twenties. Following the Stock Market Crash, FDRs New Deal and his fireside chats helped up survive Hoovervilles, but it took World War II to end the Great Depression. What happened between Pearl Harbor and the Atomic Bomb? Read my book.

For readers of Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp comes an unflinching coming-of-age addiction memoir about one woman’s journey to overcome her destructive roots to discover her road to recovery. Born to an abusive mother and a drug-dealer father, Ginelle Testa is not exactly set up for success—and her early years are just as troubled as one might expect. By the end of her thirteenth year, she’s started experimenting with alcohol and drugs, has fallen prey to anorexia, and has been sexually assaulted. And that’s only the beginning of her spiral down into addiction and disordered eating. As Ginelle progresses into young adulthood, she hits several substance-related bottoms. In her senior year of college, after blacking out and ending up naked in her dorm’s community shower, she goes to Alcoholics Anonymous and gets sober. But steering clear of drugs and alcohol, she discovers, is not a cure-all—she still has a long way to go before she can truly heal. Raw, relatable, and powerful, Testa’s is a riveting tale of climbing up from rock bottom—and learning to make a home in oneself instead of in substances and other people.
