Intertwined with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa is the personal story of a courageous woman who strove to make a difference on her own terms. In this compelling autobiographical account, Zubeida Jaffer, one of the most senior black women in the South African media, documents her struggles during a 15-year span—from 1980 when she was a young reporter to post-1994 and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings where she testified. Her political experiences in the Western Cape—of activism, harassment, torture, and detention, once while she was pregnant—are interspersed with talk about babies, her passionate love for her husband, and her problematic relationship with Islam and its sexist rules. In her story, driven by an impulse toward joy, Zubeida Jaffer triumphs as an individual, a woman, a freedom fighter, a writer, and a mother.

The one book every parent, teacher, coach, and youth pastor should read. This landmark book paints a compelling-and sobering-picture of what could happen to our society if we don't change the way we relate to today's teens and young adults. Researched-based and solution-biased, it moves beyond sounding an alarm to outlining practical strategies to: * Guide "stuck" adolescents and at-risk boys to productive adulthood * Correct crippling parenting styles * Repair damage from (unintentional) lies we've told kids * Guide them toward real success instead of superficial "self-esteem" * Adopt education strategies that engage (instead of bore) an "i" generation * Pull youth out of their "digital" ghetto into the real world * Employ their strengths and work with their weaknesses on the job * Defuse a worldwide demographic time bomb * Equip Generation iY to lead us into the future

Held on June 22, 1938, in Yankee Stadium, the second Louis-Schmeling fight sparked excitement around the globe. For all its length--the fight lasted but two minutes--it remains one of the most memorable events in boxing history and, indeed, one of the most significant sporting events ever. In this superb account, Lewis A. Erenberg offers a vivid portrait of Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, their individual careers, and their two epic fights, shedding light on what these fighters represented to their nations, and why their second bout took on such international importance. Erenberg shows how in the first fight Schmeling shocked everyone with a dramatic twelfth-round knockout of Louis, becoming a German national hero and a (unwilling) symbol of Aryan superiority. In fact, the second fight was seen around the world in symbolic terms--as a match between Nazism and American democracy. Erenberg discusses how Louis' dramatic first-round victory was a devastating blow to Hitler, who turned on Schmeling and, during the war, had the boxer (then serving as a paratrooper) sent on a series of dangerous missions. Louis, meanwhile, went from being a hero of his race--"Our Joe"--to the first black champion embraced by all Americans, black and white, an important step forward in United States race relations. Erenberg also describes how, after the war, the two boxers became symbols of German-American reconciliation. With Schmeling as a Coca Cola executive, and Louis down on his luck, the former foes became friends, and when Louis died, Schmeling helped pay for his funeral. Here then is a stirring and insightful account of one of the great moments in boxing history, a confrontation that provided global theater on an epic scale.

Our Generation is a compelling book on social philosophy and the human condition. It is an observation of how society has been formed through a conflict of logical thought and emotional projection. Using examples from the past, the modern day and the future to detail the opposition we all have within our minds and the profound consequences through lack of self-awareness. Our Generation looks in to detail to the profound topics of every day life and undresses the psychology behind what all humans hold dear. Religion, sexuality, social media, feminism, the natural world, war and technology are all subject to critical discussion within these pages and the psychology behind them are all peered in to.

“Generation Alpha” applies to children born between 2011 and 2025. They will be raised in smaller and constantly evolving families, digital natives, more tech-savvy than previous generations, globally-connected, diverse, and will live and interact with many more generations. Because of these differences, the next generation and the nation is transforming in ways that adults have never experienced before. Valora Washington invites you to consider how to advocate for and influence the trajectories of this next generation. Raising Generation Alpha Kids looks at how this generation of young children presents new opportunities and challenges, and supports and informs the two principal groups of adults in children’s lives—their families and early childhood educators.
