The Southern Caucasus is a region of great historical, cultural and strategic importance, which means that it has become an indispensable research field for most of the social sciences, particularly archaeology. However, despite its rich potential, research in the areas of modern-day Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Nakhichevan, North-western Iran and North-eastern Turkey has been inadequate when compared with other important culture basins such as Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. In October 2012, Atatürk University in Erzurum, North-eastern Anatolia, Turkey, with the patronage of the Eurasian Silk Road Universities Consortium (ESRUC), hosted a Symposium of academics from more than 120 science and education institutions around the world to discuss opinions and share information about cultures in this region from its earliest times to the Middle Ages, within the scope of Ancient History, Archaeology, Art History, and Ethno-archaeology. This two volume publication is a compilation of 75 articles, which were evaluated and selected by an Academic Committee, from contributors who presented their academic papers at the Symposium.

This volume, Overturning Certainties in Near Eastern Archaeology, is a festschrift dedicated to Professor K. Aslıhan Yener in honor of over four decades of exemplary research, teaching, fieldwork, and publication. The thirty-five chapters presented by her colleagues includes a broad, interdisciplinary range of studies in archaeology, archaeometry, art history, and epigraphy of the Ancient Near East, especially reflecting Prof Yener’s interests in metallurgy, small finds, trade, Anatolia, and the site of Tell Atchana/Alalakh. The human body represents the perfect element for relating communities of the living with the divine. This is clearly evident in the mythological stories that recount the creation of humans by deities among ancient and contemporaneous societies across a very broad geographical environment. Thus, parts of selected human body parts or skeletal elements can then become an ideal proxy for connecting with the supernatural as demonstrated by the cult of the human skulls among Neolithic communities in the Near East as well as the cult of the relics of Christian saints. The aim of this volume is to undertake a cross-cultural investigation of the role played in antiquity by humans and human remains in creating forms of relationality with the divine. Such an approach will highlight how the human body can be envisioned as part of a broader materialization of religious beliefs that is based on connecting different realms of materiality in perceiving the supernatural by the community of the livings. Case studies on ritual aspects of funerary practices is presented, emphasising the varied roles of body parts in mortuary rituals and as relics. Other papers take a wider look at regional practices in various time periods and cultural contexts to explore the central role of the corpse in the negotiation of death in human culture.
