Orientalismo, exotismo y traducción pretende ahondar en la reflexión en torno a la traducción en cuanto vehículo mediatizado de contacto intelectual, presentando especial atención a la recepción de la cultura árabe-islámica en Europa y al papel desempeñado en ella por las distintas tradiciones de estudios árabes e islámicos. El colonialismo ha condicionado la visión que tenemos de otras culturas como la árabe e islámica. Textos como Las mil y una noches y, especialmente, sus traducciones a las lenguas europeas son paradigmas de estas visiones desenfocadas y exóticas. Las disciplinas habitualmente englobadas bajo la etiqueta de Orientalismo -en España fundamentalmente Arabismo y Africanismo- han estado en nuestro país condicionadas por dos hechos que las han llevado a divergir de otras tradiciones europeas. Por un lado, la existencia de un "Oriente doméstico", Alándalus, ha marcado el desarrollo y orientación de los estudios árabes, islámicos y orientales en la universidad española. Por otra parte la empresa colonial española se materializó en un Oriente, Marruecos, que, aunque no doméstico sí era demasiado cercano, demasiado inmediato para poder separarlo de los entresijos y vivencias de la propia historia de España.

Esta obra propone una reflexión sobre el impacto que en la recepción de la literatura árabe contemporánea en Europa tuvo la concesión en 1988 del Premio Nobel de Literatura a un autor en lengua árabe: Naguib Mahfuz. El Nobel a Mahfuz activó el interés de las editoriales, que buscaron el contacto con especialistas y traductores, y provocó un aumento de las traducciones de literatura árabe contemporánea. Pero, ¿se trataba simplemente de un fenómeno coyuntural ligado al premio, o se había canalizado realmente el interés hacia una lengua y cultura tan próximas geográficamente como desconocidas en el viejo continente? ¿Podíamos hablar de una recepción europea de la literatura árabe contemporánea, o quizás era más conveniente referirse a recepciones nacionales en cada uno de los países en función de contextos particulares? ¿Había sido valorada esta literatura en los medios periodísticos europeos por su calidad, por contener unas señas de identidad incuestionables y por ofrecer una dimensión estética o creadora propias, o seguía siendo acogida sólo como expresión de hábitos y conductas diferentes, a favor o en contra de la liberación de la mujer o del extremismo religioso, desde la óptica narrativa de ’Las mil y una noches’, o fuera de ella? Transcurrida una década del Nobel 1988, por primera vez en la historia a un escritor en lengua árabe, la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo consideró que era un buen momento para hacer un primer balance sobre la recepción de la literatura árabe contemporánea en Europa. Estas páginas recogen las respuestas que traductores, profesores, narradores y editores de diferentes países de la cuenca mediterránea ofrecieron durante el coloquio que bajo el mismo título se celebró en la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo del 29 al 31 de octubre de 1998, gracias al apoyo de la Fundación Europea de la Cultura, en el marco del Observatorio Permanente sobre la Traducción del Árabe.

This book examines the modes of representation of the East in Argentinean literature since the country’s independence, in works by canonical authors such as Esteban Echeverría, Juan B. Alberdi, Domingo F. Sarmiento, Lucio V. Mansilla, Pastor S. Obligado, Eduardo F. Wilde, Leopoldo Lugones, and Roberto Arlt. The East, which has always fascinated intellectuals and artists from the Americas, inspired the creation of imaginary elements for both aesthetic and political purposes, from the depiction of purportedly despotic rulers to a genuine admiration for Eastern history and millennial cultures. These writers appropriated the East either through their travels or by reading chronicles, integrating along the way images that would end up being universalized by the Argentinean dichotomy between civilization and barbarism, all the while assigning the negative stereotypes of the exotic East to the Pampa region. With time, the exoticism of the Eastern world would shed its geopolitical meaning and was ultimately integrated into the national literature, thus adding new elements into the Argentinean imaginary.

Among the numerous discursive carriers through which translations come into being, are channeled and gain readership, translation anthologies and collections have so far received little attention among translation scholars: either they are let aside as almost ungraspable categories, astride editing and translating, mixing in most variable ways authors, genres, languages or cultures, or are taken as convenient but rather meaningless groupings of single translations. This volume takes a new stand, makes a plea to consider translation anthologies and collections at face value and offers an extensive discussion about the more salient aspects of translation anthologies and collections: their complex discursive properties, their manifold roles in canonization processes and in strategies of cultural censorship. It brings together translation scholars with different backgrounds, both theoretical and historical, and covering a wide array of European cultural areas and linguistic traditions.
