The compelling biography of the violinist who founded the symphony that became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and saved hundreds of people from Hitler—as seen in Josh Aronson’s documentary Orchestra of Exiles. At fourteen, Bronislaw Huberman played the Brahms Violin Concerto in Vienna—winning high praise from the composer himself, sparking his legendary career as a musical superstar. But after witnessing the tragedy of World War I, Huberman joined the ranks of Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein in calling for peace through the Pan-European Movement. When hope for their noble vision was destroyed by the rise of Nazism, Huberman began a crusade that would become his greatest legacy—the creation, in 1936, of the Palestine Symphony, which twelve years later became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. This deluxe digital edition of Orchestra of Exiles features exclusive video extras, including an interview with author and filmmaker Josh Aronson, as well as scholars, renowned musicians and conductors including Itzhak Perlman, current members of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, and others who discuss the inspiration, impact, and historical context of Bronislaw Huberman's life-saving mission. Also included is the Orchestra of Exiles PBS movie trailer.

The compelling biography of the violinist who founded the Palestine Symphony Orchestra and saved hundreds of people from Hitler—as seen in Josh Aronson’s documentary Orchestra of Exiles. “The true artist does not create art as an end in itself. He creates art for human beings. Humanity is the goal.”—Bronislaw Huberman At fourteen, Bronislaw Huberman played the Brahms Violin Concerto in Vienna— winning high praise from the composer himself, who was there. Instantly famous, Huberman began touring all over the world and received invitations to play for royalty across Europe. But after witnessing the tragedy of World War I, he committed his phenomenal talent and celebrity to aid humanity. After studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, Huberman joined the ranks of Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein in calling for peace through the Pan European Movement. But when hope for their noble vision was destroyed by the rise of Nazism, Huberman began a crusade that would become his greatest legacy—the creation, in 1936, of the Palestine Symphony, which twelve years later became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In creating this world-level orchestra, Huberman miraculously arranged for the very best Jewish musicians and their families to emigrate from Nazi-threatened territories. His tireless campaigning for the project—including a marathon fundraising concert tour across America—ultimately saved nearly a thousand Jews from the approaching Holocaust. Inviting the great Arturo Toscanini to conduct the orchestra’s first concert, Huberman’s clarion call of art over cruelty was heard around the world. His story contains estraordinary adventures, riches and royalty, politicians and broken promises, losses and triumphs. Against near impossible obstacles, Huberman refused to give up on his dream to create a unique and life-saving orchestra of exiles which was one of the great cultural achievements of the 20th century. George's humor and surreal lyrics became a Little Feat trademark, making songs like "Fat Man in the Bathtub" and "Dixie Chicken" unforgettable. George's colorful childhood is covered in depth as is his solo career after Little Feat that was cut short tragically. Each Little Feat album is treated to a separate chapter that examines the development of every song how it was conceived, recorded and produced. The analysis of Little Feat's complex rhythms will fascinate musicians and fans alike. "Lowell George was the best singer, songwriter and guitar player I have ever heard, hands down, in my life." With the warmth and humor we've come to know, the creator and host of A Prairie Home Companion shares his own remarkable story. In That Time of Year, Garrison Keillor looks back on his life and recounts how a Brethren boy with writerly ambitions grew up in a small town on the Mississippi in the 1950s and, seeing three good friends die young, turned to comedy and radio. Through a series of unreasonable lucky breaks, he founded A Prairie Home Companion and put himself in line for a good life, including mistakes, regrets, and a few medical adventures. PHC lasted forty-two years, 1,557 shows, and enjoyed the freedom to do as it pleased for three or four million listeners every Saturday at 5 p.m. Central. He got to sing with Emmylou Harris and Renée Fleming and once sang two songs to the U.S. Supreme Court. He played a private eye and a cowboy, gave the news from his hometown, Lake Wobegon, and met Somali cabdrivers who’d learned English from listening to the show. He wrote bestselling novels, won a Grammy and a National Humanities Medal, and made a movie with Robert Altman with an alarming amount of improvisation. He says, “I was unemployable and managed to invent work for myself that I loved all my life, and on top of that I married well. That’s the secret, work and love. And I chose the right ancestors, impoverished Scots and Yorkshire farmers, good workers. I’m heading for eighty, and I still get up to write before dawn every day.”

My father wrote this unpublished manuscript in 1975 and stated then that "this was the first linguistically oriented book on the Yiddish language as a whole, as opposed to monographs on specific aspects of Yiddish linguistics, to be written in English." As for the title (usually spelt mamaloshen) he said 'the restriction of the Yiddish recorded in this book to the "Yiddish my mother taught me" strengthens some of the contentions advanced in it'. Thus, in stressing the importance of the Hebrew elements in Yiddish, the author only uses the Hebrew words and phrases he recalled actually hearing from his mother. The book seeks to analyse the various strands: German, Hebrew-Aramaic, Polish-Russian, that have gone into the making of Yiddish. It tries to bring out the strength of the Hebrew element and to show that the German element is not bad or corrupt German, but normal Middle High German.Whatever can be said about the Yiddish recorded in these pages, the reader can rest assured that it is not factitious. The writer would claim it to be normal, authentic (not Standard) Yiddish. "Standard" Yiddish was laid down by Yivo, the Yiddish Scientific Institute of New York, too late, alas; after the Holocaust. The slaughter of millions of virtually unilingual Yiddish speakers, together with the loss by natural causes of millions of Jews in the USA and the USSR who spoke Yiddish as their mother tongue, meant that those who could have been expected to adopt a "Standard" Yiddish were a fraction of those who had spoken it for generations previously without benefit of "standards".
