Irresistible stories of how a leading animal behaviorist diagnoses and treats cat behavior problems Considered one of the country's leading animal behaviorists, Dr. John Wright has spent the last decade making house calls on problem pets. He diagnoses the cause of the problem behavior and then works with owners to find an appropriate treatment. This book, an engaging account of his work with misbehaving felines, is at once funny, charming, and highly informative. Readers will learn why cats refuse to use their litter boxes, scratch and bite, go through sudden personality changes, react in different ways to different people and other animals, and behave the way they do; and they'll find out what works and what doesn't work when it comes to kitty "discipline". The result is a book no cat lover will want to miss.

After a great deal of preparation, Danika begins her new digital dragon's life in a very small way. They say the "Living Jade Empire" creates individualized quests. They say it can read your mind. They say you can find your heart's desire. They say that there's never been a game like it, and they're right but… they're also wrong. The game is a data mine, built to retell the old tales that humans have been telling each other since language was invented. It doesn't read your mind, but it reads your search history, your favorites, and your blogs. The "Living Jade Empire" is literally crafted from fables, legends, fantasies, and maybe just a bit of stardust. But in the end, will the game be able to figure out what Danika wants most? Will the desires of other players take priority? Or, will playing it change her, until she desires what it can give her? A journey is always made up of many small steps, and this game has still only just begun.

Professional ethics require continuous self-improvement of professors, through writing, reading, and learning: no less than for students. Promoting excellence in scholarship, mentoring students in their research, and effectively teaching, are vital elements in our professional and personal growth. However, any one of these could be a full-time job in itself. To excel in each role, it is essential for faculty members to reflect daily on our work. What is the role of comparisons, in this reflection? Though our colleagues’ successes may suggest to us possibilities in our own work that we didn’t know existed, there is a danger that our neighbor’s “flowers” will always seem more beautiful than our own. We should let comparisons with others suggest new approaches to our goals, but never focus on comparing our outcomes (successes and failures) with those of other people. Instead, we should focus on steadily improving our own levels of mastery of skills in scholarship and in work with students. In American academia, where both faculty members and students are ethnically and culturally diverse, such that we will often find our assumptions challenged, reflective thinking is even more essential than in a culturally homogeneous environment. Hence reflective, systematic approaches to daily practice in reading, teaching, and writing are powerful survival tactics, and are likely to sustain one’s vitality and productivity as a member of the academy.

A dark and uproarious satire about media, the modern city and a missing cat, from journalist and award-winning broadcaster Bill Cameron When Jones, an ordinary house cat, pops through a loose window screen and abandons his wealthy owner’s country home for the sweltering city by the lake, he does not think of the trouble he’ll cause. Ethical-sausage magnate François Will tries to impress his heartbroken wife by announcing a two-million-dollar reward for Jones’s return and throws the city into chaos. In 17 Division, home to downtown’s seediest neighbourhoods, the promise of millions drives its residents into alleys, trash heaps and garages, searching for the little black cat that can make all their dreams come true. Sergeant Judd, a hard-boiled but deeply troubled cop, sees an escape from his own problems; his favourite stripper-turned-informant is courting disaster with an obsessive dentistry professor and a very large snake, while his senile aunt wastes his children’s badly needed inheritance on a house full of stray cats, driving Judd to desperate measures. Add to Jones’s pursuers a murderous and ingenious television reporter, and Cat’s Crossing boils over into a rich satire of media manipulation, mass hysteria and the maddening things we do for love.
