This research studied the use of multi-element sensors based on electrochemical techniques for optimizing information related to corrosion control in water distribution systems. Such on-line sensor methods could provide an affordable and reliable tool for daily monitoring and mitigate some of the costs associated with following the mandates of the EPA's corrosion control for potable water.

A typical water distribution system is complex and chaotic with varying piping configurations, water flows, chemical reactions, and microbiological activity. It is therefore no surprise that monitoring water quality can be a daunting task, not to mention dealing with the devastating and costly effects of: Noncompliance with the Lead and Copper Rule Pinhole leaks in water service lines and private plumbing Vulnerability to microorganisms in the water distribution system Unwanted side effects from treatment chemicals Mistakes in treatment chemicals and dosage amounts These common water quality issues can be avoided by routinely monitoring key water quality parameters in the distribution system in a controlled and standardized manner. While proactive monitoring costs money, having water quality problems is even more costly. Water Distribution System Monitoring: A Practical Approach for Evaluating Drinking Water Quality provides a practical step-by-step approach and open-source technology for proactive water quality management. It describes a method for routinely monitoring the water distribution system by: Assembling a standardized monitoring station Planning a monitoring strategy, and Interpreting and using the water quality data Deliver safe and economical drinking water to your customers. Why wait three years to find out if the water system is in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule? Why guess which corrosion control chemical is the right one? Why guess how much disinfection is needed in the water distribution system? Optimize your chemical usage, minimize your operational expenses, and confirm that the water is safe. Laying out a path to quality control and process improvement, this book provides the tools for well-defined and measurable control of water quality.

The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA-CERL)has employed an apparatus known as the Pipe Loop System (CERL-PLS) to evaluate corrosion and corrosion control programs in distribution water systems The apparatus uses multiple corrosion specimens of distribution system materials in direct contact with water under conditions simulating typical operation At two U S Army water treatment plants, the CERL-PLS was used to monitor corrosion of mild steel and galvanized steel piping materials in the distribution system and determine the effect of a corrosion inhibitor on the long-term corrosion rates At another Army installation, the effects of various water treatment options were studied for reducing lead dissolution from plumbing system materials The data presented demonstrate the successful application of a pipe loop system for optimization of water treatment for corrosion control and hence to meet drinking water quality standards.

Part of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water Set - buy all five books together to save over 30%! This Code of Practice is concerned with metal pick-up by drinking water within the water supply chain, particularly from water mains and from domestic and institutional pipe-work systems. The principal metals of interest are copper, iron, and lead, and to a lesser extent nickel and zinc. The emphasis is on cold drinking water at its point of use by consumers. Metals arising from water sources and hot water systems are not considered. The intention is that this Code of Practice establishes an international standard for the control of internal corrosion of water supply systems. It provides a basis for identifying both problems and sustainable solutions in a manner which is sound scientifically and will help operators to achieve due diligence. It provides a template for improving internal corrosion control in countries, cities or towns where this has been neglected or poorly implemented. Internal Corrosion Control of Water Supply Systems is deliberately brief in its presentation of a wide array of complex information, in order to provide direction to practitioners that can be more easily related to their specific circumstances. The book also provides a series of check-lists and criteria to be used in risk assessment. Editor: Dr Colin R Hayes, University of Swansea, UK, Chair of IWA Specialist Group on Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water.
