Abstract: Food is the largest industry in the United States. Careers in food service are numerous and varied. The field of food has opportunities for people with varying educational backgrounds, from high school graduates to those with doctorates. Specific training is necessary in many food related jobs. Fourteen food careers from catering to writing food articles in newspapers are described in detail; each chapter introduces one or more people involved in the career under discussion. Marge Baxter is a home economics teacher in an inner-city school. In addition to food preparation, many class periods are spent planning what will be prepared, discussing nutrition and evaluating the food after it is prepared. Other chapters describe careers as dietitian, home economist for utility companies, chef, restaurant owner, food service supervisor for public schools, foods scientist, meat packer and cutter, health food store operator and cook for senior citizens.
