Unit 1: Advent/Christmas Children will begin this unit with the story of angels bringing the message to Joseph of the impending birth of Jesus. They will learn the child Mary was carrying was the son of God and would deliver God's people from their sins. Through the account of Mary, Elizabeth, and John, children will discover that Christmas is a great time to share the good news of Jesus' birth. The story of the birth of Christ teaches children that Jesus is the Messiah that God promised; and narrative of the shepherds explains we should praise God for the gift of Jesus. Unit 2: The Life of Jesus Through the story of the wise men, children will learn that Jesus' birth shows God's love for all people. As they study the story of Jesus in the temple, children will discover that church is a place where they learn more about God and what God wants them to do and be. The account of Jesus' baptism shows that through baptism, God claims us as beloved children; and the story of Jesus in the wilderness shows us that Jesus demonstrates who God wants us to be and what God wants us to do. Unit 3: Jesus Begins His Ministry Soon after his baptism and his experience in the wilderness, Jesus began teaching in Galilee. The story of Jesus in the synagogue shows children that he came to teach us about God's love. Just as Jesus called his disciples, children will discover that Jesus calls us to tell others about God. Children will learn that Jesus shows us that God's love is for all people, and everyone can share the message of God's love. One Leader's Guide is included in the winter Kit (9780687036196). Unit 1: Celebrate! God fulfilled the promise to send a Savior to the people. Today Christians from around the world prepare for and celebrate the birth of God's Son, Jesus. Units 2 & 3: Parables and Teachings Jesus often used stories called parables to help the people know about God and to understand what God called them to do and to be. Jesus used these common images of life in Bible times to convey his message. Many of these experiences are beyond the scope of our children's experiences. But during this unit, we will help the children relate to stories such as the Good Samaritan, The Lost Sheep, The Sower & the Seed, The Forgiving Father, The Two Houses, The Pharisee & the Tax Collector, and The story of the Mustard Seed.
