Using California as the model for the adversarial system and Germany as the model for the inquisitorial system, this innovative work seeks to add a new dimension to the comparative study of criminal justice. The basic idea is contained in the title, One Case--Two Systems. Containing the first ever side-by-side portrayals of full American and German trials, the book views a single case through two separate lenses--one American, one German. Returning home unexpectedly from a vacation in the country, an elderly man interrupts a night time burglary in his own house and is attacked as the burglar tries to escape. By portraying an ordinary crime--a burglary that turns into a robbery--rather than a dramatic, high-profile murder, the book provides a detailed, working picture of the two systems and the contrasts between them. Allowing the reader to observe and compare the formal steps that cases go through in the two systems, it brings the work of the police, the prosecution, the defense, and the courts to life - by giving thoughts and reasons as well as actions. Even the most critical documents are included. Designed to illustrate the most important differences between the two systems, the country chapters first portray the California investigation and prosecution and then take the same case through the German system. Often seeing eye-to-eye but sometimes diverging sharply, the two sets of comments focus on the critical issues depicted in the country chapters--seeking to explain the similarities, differences, and peculiarities of the two systems. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

This book presents the proceedings of the Eighth National Conference of the Italian Systems Society. The contributions underline the need for Systemics and Systems Science in order to address multiple, changing systems involving several coherent versions. The conference focused on identifying, discussing, and understanding possible interrelationships between fundamental theoretical advances in different disciplines. Given their scope, these proceedings represent a valuable asset for all researchers whose work involves multiple systems.

R. MILNE Intelligent Applications Ltd The papers in this volume are the Application Papers presented at ES98, the Eighteenth International Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems. This year has been yet another "applications" success for the conference with this volume containing seventeen papers describing either deployed applications or emerging applications. All these documented case studies provide clear evidence of the success of AI technology in solving real business problems. Six of these papers were nominated for the Best Application Award during the review process. These nominations were then reviewed by the members of the Programme Committee to select the winning paper. The papers in the volume were subject to refereeing by at least two referees. All papers which were controversial for some reason were discussed in depth by the Application Programme Committee. Ten referees from the industrial and commercial sector and nine referees from the academic sector assisted me in reviewing the papers. The review form asked the referee to score the papers according to a number of dimensions, to rate it overall, and to offer critical comments to me, and to the authors. It also asks the referee to score their expertise in the area of each paper they review. Only reviews from 'expert' referees are used.
