"My interest in this disease was aroused as a result of working on the white pine blister rust control project. Over a period of three years, I have made observations on the nature of the disease and on the infection of white pine and ribes (currant and gooseberry plants). However, the actual work of collecting most of the literature relative to the disease, was not begun until the spring of 1951. It is hoped that this study will help others to become familiar with the nature of white pine blister rust and that more people will realize that this disease as well as many others caused by parasites, is a matter of grave concern for everyone. The economic, recreational, scenic and ornamental value of the white pine tree cannot be measured; it would be well for all of us to be more aware of the value of such trees and to cooperate in the steps being taken to save the white pine from eradication by blister rust."--Preface.
