Excerpt from On the Marriage of First Cousins The question of kinship in marriage, within what degrees it should be permitted, and whether near of kin should be allowed and even encouraged to marry has attracted attention and provoked discussion from very early times. Reasoned Objection to marriages Of near kin on the grounds Of harm to the Offspring, however, seems to be Of relatively late growth. Plato, in the Laws, says that the reason why such marriages are forbidden (he is re ferring to the marriage Of brother and sister) is simply habit and custom, as were such marriages allowed people would marry those most like themselves, which would prevent the proper mixture of character and property. Excerpt from Consanguineous Marriages in the American Population Much space is given to the alleged innate horror of incest, and frequent appeals are made to Scripture, wrongly assuming that the marriage of cousins is prohibited in the Mosaic Law. The origin of prohibited degrees is only conjectural. The Christian Church apparently borrowed its prohibitory canons from the Roman Law,1 and a dispensation is still necessary before a Catholic can marry his first cousin. However, such dispensations have always been easy to Ob tain, especially by royal families, and even the marriage of uncle and niece sometimes occurs, as among the Spanish Habsburgs, and as recently as 1889 in the House of Savoy. The prohibition of the marriage of first cousins was re moved in England by the Marriage Act of but by this time the idea of the harmfulness of kinship marriage was so thoroughly impressed upon the people that they were very prone to look askance at such unions, and if they were followed by any defective progeny, the fact would be noted, and looked upon as a chastisement visited upon the parents for their sin. Naturally the idea became proverbial, and in some places it has influenced the civil law. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
