"Exploring the Tapovan takes the reader on an expedition into the leafy, clammy, forested landscapes of tropical Asia. Peter Ashton and David Lee, two of the world's leading scholars on Asian tropical rain forests reveal the geology and climate that have produced these unique forests, the diversity of species that inhabit them, and the role of humans in modifying the landscapes over centuries. This work follows Peter Ashton's massive On the Forests of Tropical Asia, the first book to describe the forests of the entire tropical Asian region, from Sind to New Guinea. It provides a more condensed, accessible, and updated overview of tropical Asian forests aimed at students as well as tropical forest biologists, ecologists, and conservation biologists"--

This is the first book to describe the forests of the entire tropical Asian region, from Sind to New Guinea. Based on Peter Ashton s working field experience of over 55 years in every country, Burma and Laos excepted. Following a chapter on physical geography and geological history, seven chapters address forest and tree structure and dynamics, floristics, mountain forests, the other organisms on which the forests and trees depend, as well as genetics, evolutionary history, species diversity, and past and present human impact. A final chapter covers future policy and practice options for the sustainment of what remains. Each chapter focuses on the nature of forest variation, and attempts to provide an understanding of its causes based on the published literature, Peter s own experience, and his research collaborations. The author presents hypotheses to explain these patterns of variation as a stimulation for further research (especially by students within the region), and as a framework for policy makers, foresters and conservation biologists, as well as the serious naturalist/ecotourist."

Although global environmental problems created by the disappearance of tropical rain forests are all too well known, the forests themselves--vast in size and rich in diversity--are the least understood of the world's ecosystems. This book presents one researcher's view of Southeast Asia's tropical rainforests, based on a quarter century of fieldwork in a wide range of forest types. Moving from the mangrove of the coastal belt, inland through freshwater and peat swamp forests, to the lowly dipterocarp forests of the heartlands, and up to the montane forests, the author's lively account contains a wealth of detailed observations that effectively communicate the complex natural structure of tropical rain forests while providing the reader with candid first impressions--mud, mosquitoes, and all.

"Close-up views of endangered fauna in their natural habitats are difficult enough to obtain, but the breathtaking artistic quality of the photography in this valuable documentation of Asia's disappearing forest habitats makes this book highly recommended for both scientists and nature lovers alike." --Robert Stuebing, The Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. Author of A Field Guide to the Snakes of Borneo Asia's Wildlife provides rare insights into Asia's breathtaking tropical forests and the rare species that inhabit them--many of which are now endangered. Proceeds from this book will go to support the conservation activities of BirdLife International. Produced to raise funds and awareness of nature conservation through their Forest of Hope program, Asia's Wildlife is a mesmerizing year-long photographic journey of the expedition taken by Fanny Lai and photographer Bjorn Olesen. Readers can become part of their journey as they observe, photograph, and describe Asia's most distinctive animal species. The trip brings you to the most remote and biodiverse forests in eight different countries in Asia, and gives you the opportunity to learn about rarely seen--let alone photographed--endangered animal species. Over 190 images and illustrations feature 129 different animal species, of which 72 are national endemics, including: The Giant Cloud Rat The majestic Philippine Eagle The critically endangered Helmeted Hornbill And many other fascinating creatures! Discover the ongoing conservation efforts to protect these precious forests, as well as very real threats to the future of the animals and habitats.
