A sixteen-year-old must battle his way across a thousand miles of deadly lunar terrain and face genetically altered super warriors in his quest to recover an astonishing object that will alter the lives of everyone on the moon . . . and beyond. It’s the 22nd Century. A tough, pioneering people mine the moon produce energy for a desperate, war-torn Earth. Sixteen-year-old Crater Trueblood loves his job as a Helium-3 miner. But when he saves a fellow miner, his life changes forever. Impressed by his heroism, the owner of the mine orders Crater to undertake a dangerous mission. Crater doesn’t think he can do it, but he has no choice. He must go. With the help of Maria, the mine owner’s frustrating but gorgeous granddaughter, and his gillie—a sometimes insubordinate clump of slime mold cells—Crater must fight both human and subhuman enemies to complete his mission. New York Times bestselling author Homer Hickman (Rocket Boys) will take you on a hold-your-breath adventure across the moon, and you’ll never look at the night sky the same way again. The first installment of the Helium-3 series Book #1: Crater Book #2: Crescent Book #3: Crater Trueblood and the Lunar Rescue Company Book length: 75,000 words Includes discussion questions for book clubs

Despite their global importance, little is known about the few existing examples of impacts into marine environments and icy targets. They are among the least understood and studied parts of impact crater geology. The icy impacts are also of great importance in understanding the developments of the outer planets and their satellites such as Mars or Europa. Furthermore, the impact mechanisms, crater formation and collapse, melt production and the ejecta distribution are scarcely known for impact on targets other than the "classical" solid silicates of the continental crust. The reaction of water and ice to impacts clearly deserves a more thorough study. The understanding of impact effects and consequences in the case of aqueous hits, soft sediments and icy targets has not been thoroughly explored and comprises the main focus of this book. A number of papers in the field of hypervelocity impacts on ice are included. These cover a review of available literature in the field of laboratory studies of such impacts, large impact structures on Titan, predicting impact cratering on a comet nucleus, and a novel report on the survival of bacteria fired at hypervelocity into icy surfaces. This latter paper is concerned with astrobiology and in particular Panspermia (natural migration of life through space).

Aspects of cratering phenomenology are considered along with material properties and shock effects, theoretical cratering mechanics, ejecta, and problems of scaling. Attention is given to the application of high explosion cratering data to planetary problems, cratering mechanisms observed in laboratory-scale high-explosive experiments, nuclear cratering experiments, complex craters in alluvium, terrestrial impact structures, the Ries impact crater, buried impact craters in the Williston basin and the adjacent area, crater morphometry from bistatic radar, a Fourier analysis of planimetric lunar crater shape, a stratigraphic model for Bessel Crater and southern Mare Serenitatis, a nested-crater model of lunar ringed basins, Martian fresh crater morphology and morphometry, the distribution and emplacement of ejecta around Martian impact craters, the nature of the present interplanetary crater-forming projectiles, cratering mechanics and future Martian exploration, the response of rocks to large stresses, the dynamical implications of the petrology and distribution of impact melt rocks, and a review and comparison of hypervelocity impact and explosion cratering calculations.
