Although good devices exist for presenting visual and auditory sensations, there has yet to be a device for presenting olfactory stimulus. Nevertheless, the area for smell presentation continues to evolve and smell presentation in multimedia is not unlikely in the future. Human Olfactory Displays and Interfaces: Odor Sensing and Presentation provides the opportunity to learn about olfactory displays and its odor reproduction. Covering the fundamental and latest research of sensors and sensing systems as well as presentation technique, this book is vital for researchers, students, and practitioners gaining knowledge in the fields of consumer electronics, communications, virtual realities, electronic instruments, and more.

As technology expands and evolves, one-dimensional, graphical user interface (GUI) design becomes increasingly limiting and simplistic. Designers must meet the challenge of developing new and creative interfaces that adapt to meet human needs and technological trends. HCI Beyond the GUI provides designers with this know how by exploring new ways to reach users that involve all of the human senses. Dr. Kortum gathers contributions from leading human factors designers to present a single reference for professionals, researchers, and students. - Explores the human factors involved in the design and implementation of the nontraditional interfaces, detailing design strategies, testing methodologies, and implementation techniques - Provides an invaluable resource for practitioners who design interfaces for children, gamers and users with accessibility needs - Offers extensive case studies, examples and design guidelines

Introduction to Machine Olfaction Devices discusses the various aspects of a MOD device, from historical approaches to state-of-the-art technologies. This book also covers the mechanism in dealing and detecting gases, odor, and aroma. Problems and solutions relevant to present day design have been outlined as well as a step-by-step guide to Machine Olfaction Device (MOD) design. Sensors and gas systems, along with polymers and certain manufacturing processes, have been discussed, together with other relevant materials for the MOD process and functions including comparison and validations, data processing, data analysis, MOD new design, micro systems, and monitoring systems. Aimed at developing a novel and improved MOD with more efficient on-board data processing capability for monitoring applications, this book will help you to design an MOD with - a faster stabilizing base line; - a quicker sample result display; - an ability to use ambient air; - a low power consumption; and - the ability to deal with different varieties of organic/inorganic samples. With a focus on the most important and relevant aspects of designing MODs which currently require a solution, topics covered include MOD and market issues, cost, technical issues, and MOD applications. With a huge range of potential applications, this book will be of special interest to those working (or studying) in this field at every level, from Biomedical, Energy, or Electrical Engineers, to Computer or Food Scientists. Our food experiences can be significantly influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic multisensory information. Therefore, it is crucial to understand and apply the principles that govern the systematic connections that exist between the senses in the context of Human-Food Interaction (HFI). In our Research Topic, namely Multisensory Human-Food Interaction (MHFI), several studies that consider such connections in the context of HFI are presented. We also have contributions that focus on multisensory technologies that can be used to share and reproduce specific HFIs. This eBook, which resulted from the Research Topic, presents some of the most recent developments in the field of MHFI. In particular, it consists of two main sections and corresponding articles. The eBook begins with the Editorial, which provides an overview of MHFI. Then, it includes six articles that relate to principles in MHFI and three on technologies in MHFI. We hope that the different contributions featured here will support future developments in MHFI research.
